1) God’s righteous judgment against sin is proclaimed before His forgiveness of sin is offered. A person has no reason to seek salvation if he does not know he is condemned. He has no reason to want spiritual life unless he realizes he is spiritually dead.
11) Turning willfully against God is to move from light into darkness. The blindness that follows is therefore self-imposed. 12) The reason God calls us not to be ashamed to speak the gospel in which his righteousness is revealed is because humanity in general has suppressed God’s truth and righteousness.

2) We cannot appreciate God’s love/holiness/grace until we see the consequence of sin. 3) Sin includes any action or attitude contrary to the rule of God. 4) Mercy is meaningless except in relation to justice, and to attempt to retain the concept of God’s love without wrath is illogical. 5) The entire weight of verses 16 and 17 is anchored on the assumption that all humanity is under the wrath of God. 6) Wrath is the active opposition of God’s holy nature to everything that is evil. 7) Origin of God’s Wrath—God’s wrath is not like human anger, which is tainted by sin. It is foolish and unbiblical to attempt to measure God by human standards, and then discount the idea of His wrath simply because human anger is always flawed by sin. 8) Timing of God’s Wrath—God’s wrath is continually being revealed, perpetually being manifested. 9) Extent of God’s Wrath—Obviously, some people are morally better than others, but even the most moral person falls far short of God’s standard of perfect righteousness (Romans 3:23). 10) Cause of God’s Wrath—Unrighteousness is so much a part of man’s nature that every person has a built-in, natural, compelling desire to suppress and oppose God’s truth.
