August 6/7, 2016 Romans 1:18-20
FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1) 1:18 God’s wrath is His active opposition to everything opposed to Him. 2) 1:18 Mankind cannot act righteously because they are not rightly related to God, the source of righteousness.
GREEK WORDS Asebeia (as-eb'-i-ah)—impiety, wickedness :- ungodly (-liness) Adikia (ad-ee-kee'-ah)—legal term; injustice (by implication the act) :- iniquity, unjust, unrighteous (-ness) Phaneros (fan-er-os')—shining, apparent (as adverb) publicly, externally :- manifest, open [+ -ly], outward ([+ -ly]) Poiēma (poy'-ay-mah)—a product, i.e. fabric :- thing that is made, workmanship
3) 1:18 Ungodliness—lack of reverence/fear of the living God. Unrighteousness—the lack of the fear of God leads to a lack of justice for people. 4) 1:18 Because wickedness, by its very essence, denies truth, it cannot do anything other than move in the opposite direction from God, ultimately dragging everything in its wake with it. 5) 1:19 Humanity stands under God’s wrath because they ignore what they know. 6) 1:19 Four specifics of God’s “natural revelation” (in contrast to God’s “special revelation,” which comes through the Bible): Well-defined and clear Understood Constant Limited 7) 1:20 God’s natural revelation of Himself is not obscure. 8) 1:20 Although the created order cannot force a person to believe, it does leave the recipient responsible for not believing. 9) 1:20 No person can claim ignorance; therefore no person can claim God’s wrath is unjust.
