Thank you for purchasing our XT500 points source coil assembly. The original XT points magnetos are beginning to suffer the effects of age and many do not perform as they did when new. It is possible to repair the windings but if there is corrosion between the laminates, a repaired part will never work as well as a brand new one.!

Special tools you’ll need: Multimeter, soldering iron & flywheel puller - All available from our website!
Follow the bike’s manual and remove the flywheel. Identify the magneto source winding, fitted on the bike it’s the one on the right. On TT models its the same size as the lighting coil, so be sure to work on the right hand one. Our p/n SC-3 is not intended as a lighting coil. Remove the stator completely from the bike.!

Find the joint in the wire that connects to the source winding and snip it to remove the least amount from the wiring loom. Remove the old source winding assembly from the stator. !
! Fit the new complete assembly, note that the earthing tag goes to the bottom as shown.! !
Put the new insulation piece over the wire and solder the source coil tail to the output wire. Note the tail of the new winding is tinned, if you need to shorten the tail, the copper winding wire is not solderable. To solder the shortened tail, scrape the enamel away with a sharp knife first. Try and solder the cleaned area to ensure the solder takes all the way round the wire. A poor joint will be made if only a portion of the wire takes solder.!

Apply some rapid setting epoxy resin (‘Double-Bubble’ 5 minute epoxy in small sachets is available from our website) to the soldered joint and push the insulating sleeve over it. !

Ensure the wires are well tucked back from the crank shaft. On the XTs its easy to trap wires between the stator and engine case. If the plate doesn’t fit easy check for trapped wires under it. Check for a 2.3 ohm (+/10%) at 20 degrees C (70F) between the output (black) wire and the generator backplate. Finally, fit the flywheel and turn it through 2 revolutions, make sure its not touching the new winding.!
