Date: January 3, 2014 BG Education Foundation’s December School Shout-Outs Battle Ground Education Foundation (BGEF) continues to highlight the schools throughout the district with breakfast and a $300 scholarship. Four schools were highlighted for the month of December: Prairie High School, CAM Academy, Summit View High School, and River HomeLink. Each building principal was asked to write a short paragraph highlighting great practices in the school. Below is a photo and excerpt from each school. “We would like to take this opportunity to highlight our campus library and staff. Our library staff work hard to support students by offering a wide collection of materials designed to reinforce classroom learning. Each student receives one-on-one support from staff to find the right resource at the appropriate reading level to ensure student achievement. “CAM Academy supports student learning through the use of Wordly Wise workbooks in grades 5 – 8. The weekly lessons help build strong vocabulary skills which are applied to reading and writing assignments. Teachers look for opportunities to connect the words with content areas to strengthen retention. These connections give students a stronger foundation for high school academics.” Colleen O’Neal, Principal

“Summit View High School has strengthened its one-on-one instructional model with a new Leadership and Peer Mentoring class. Started by SVHS Counselor Renee Andrews, this class builds skills for student success, works to acclimate new students to our school, and helps students navigate coursework by providing peer support. Our model allows staff the opportunity to get to know the students well and support them in their academic needs as well as address other needs that impact school success, Bill Penrose (SVHS) & Chris Burt whether they be social, economic, or other.” Bill Penrose, Principal “River HomeLink continues to focus on the importance of character development. Each month we highlight a new character quality for the students and parents. The character focus for the month of December is generosity. We believe a strong character foundation is essential to long term academic and life success. We would like to thank the BGEF for their continued support.
