State and federal laws require public schools to release report cards to the public each year. This year, the report card has been updated to reflect changes in reporting directed by the SC Education Oversight Committee. Schools will not be rated for state accountability purposes until Fall 2017 when the state will transition to a single accountability system. Our school is helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the Graduate by growing each of our students academically, artistically, musically, athletically, and socially. The following curricular goals were at the forefront of our instructional program this school year: emphasize literacy across all content areas, emphasize and implement total student participation techniques, and teach and model effective communication skills of speaking, listening, and problem solving. We celebrated 100% passage of all EOC tests given, 38 students being named South Carolina Junior Scholars, and 98% of last year’s 7th and 8th graders taking at least .5 units toward his or her high school diploma. Each of our three music departments scored Superior at their respective concert festival this year. Additional honors included our orchestra students producing 2 all-state performers (one of which was a first chair performer), our Symphonic Band earning Outstanding Performing Award this year with a perfect score, and our chorus program boasting 15 all-state performers. We were fortunate to have had four students attend Summer Discovery Camp at the Governor’s School of the Arts in visual arts and music. Overall, 80% of our upperclassmen at Seneca Middle School participated in either music or athletic programs this year. The effects of our advisory period and PBIS program created yet another year of reduction in disciplinary referrals from last school year. This continued a 7-year pattern of disciplinary reductions from the previous school year. We were honored and extremely appreciative to have received a 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant to fully fund our after school program entitled WORK (Wildcat Occupational Readiness Knowledge). The program served approximately 100 students for 30 weeks of the school year. The program consisted of a daily routine of academic instruction and assistance from certified staff, an after-school snack, 2 Enrichment Periods, and transportation home afterward. The Enrichment Periods mentioned earlier included financial education, health and physical activity, Lego design and construction, BMX bicycle design and construction, and soft skill training through Junior Achievement. All in all, we have had an exceptional school year! Seneca Middle School is gifted with first-rate faculty, staff, students, parents, and community! Together, we are privileged to work toward molding and preparing our greatest resource – our children.
