As we complete the first week of school, I feel energized by the enthusiasm of the students, the professionalism and commitment of the staff, and the parent/community support that is evident at Orient-Macksburg Community Schools!

The school facilities were clean and ready to welcome students on the first day of school, Farmer’s and Merchant’s State Bank and the Pizza Ranch provided meals for the staff during in-service days, and the PTO and high school students assisted with the Open House supper – all of these efforts were greatly appreciated. The school year is off to a great start, thanks to the efforts of many people.

This school year the professional development for Orient-Macksburg teachers will focus on effective questioning and student engagement. Research has shown that quality questioning techniques such as: (1) preplanning “thinking” questions, (2) allowing “wait” time for students to think and process after posing a question, (3) promoting multiple responses to questions, and (4) asking students to justify their responses, lead to higher levels of engagement in learning, as well as, higher achievement for students. In addition, this year students will be involved in generating their own “thinking” questions and using these questions in student-led discussions, which leads to motivation, active learning, and higher levels of comprehension. K-6 literacy teachers will be meeting on a regular basis to engage in professional development and collaborative planning. We will focus on increasing students’ proficiency in reading through the use of research-based vocabulary and comprehension strategies and having high expectations for all students to be able to read and comprehend grade-level text. Thank you for the warm welcome that I have received at Orient-Macksburg Community Schools and thanks in advance for the on-going support of parents and the community throughout the 2017-2018 school year. Working together leads to student success!
