Dear Friends It’s almost September and the beginning of another new academic year. We’ve been busy at The Vicarage this past day or so buying new school uniforms and shoes (just the name tapes to put in now!) as well as helping two to start packing ready for university and college. And I know that this is happening for lots of other families as well across our parish and beyond.

Perhaps I don’t (or we don’t) have to hanker back for the holidays and the sun and lazy days? Perhaps like with Aidan that ‘lingering’ can be found in the rhythm of the every-day with opportunities for work, for prayer, for rest, for play …….. ?

I don’t know about you but I like this time of year, with its sense of ‘batteries re-charged’, the smell of new paint after maintenance work done, and school and groups and clubs starting back up again after a summer break. Though I also always find myself wondering where the last year went, where the summer has gone and longing to linger a little while longer in ‘holiday’ mode where I tend to feel much more aware of the gift of every day and of the beauty and wonder around me.

With all good wishes Angela A prayer attributed to St Aidan of Lindisfarne Leave me alone with God as much as may be. As the tide draws the waters close in upon the shore make me an island, set apart, alone with you, God, holy to you.

St Aidan wrote a prayer about the ebb and flow of life and about time for rest and re-creation as well as for work and busyness. I do not know a lot about Aidan except that he was a passionate and compassionate man for whom nature, work and prayer seemed to interweave and very much alive to the rhythm of the seasons.

The Boiler Appeal Thank you to everyone who has responded so generously to this appeal. At the last count over £14,000 has been raised through donations, pledges and events. A substantial amount of this money has been giftaided and we hope to receive a further £3000 through the gift-aid scheme. Once again, THANK YOU. The new boilers will be fitted in the week beginning 7th September 2015. Look out for a ‘switching on of the boiler’ event!

Christmas Tree on the Village Green We are

looking for a Christmas tree for the Village Green this year. Perhaps you have a tree in your garden which you no longer want and can wait until December for it to be

removed? Please speak to one of the churchwardens or clergy if you can help. Thank you.

Covenanted Partnerships

Each PCC in our diocese is being asked to consider becoming part of a Covenanted Partnership Ecumenical Area. This would allow ministers from the Methodist and United Reformed Churches to conduct baptisms and preside at a service of Holy Communion in our churches and vice-versa. The PCC voted in agreement with this as we look towards working more closely with neighbouring churches including our ecumenical partners.

Parish Offer The Parish Offer is money given to the

diocese towards the payment of clergy and associated ministry costs. The PCC, following the recommendation of FinCom (Finance Committee) agreed to pay £40,240 which is just over two-thirds of the cost of a clergyperson.

Work in the churchyard During the Autumn work will be done to level the ground where graves have sunk. A bush by the main gate to the churchyard will be removed.

Organist Jonathan Hall is in a position to return as our organist. Clive Walkley and the PCC are delighted with this news. Jonathan is expected to return sometime during September.

The Quinquennial Inspection of the Church This was carried

out in the week beginning 13th July 2015 by our new architect Chloe Granger. We look forward to receiving the report and getting on with the work we need to do.

Bibles for school leavers St Mark’s Church purchased Bibles for our seventeen school leavers at St Mark’s CE School. These were presented at the Leavers’ Service by Mrs Di Outhwaite (Foundation Governor/Vice Chair). 4

Continuing our series of articles from the World War One Exhibition by John Chandler:

Alexander Cragghill Alexander born in early 1899 was the youngest of seven children, six boys and one girl. His parents were William and Catherine Cragghill of 19 Helmside, Oxenholme. William was 48 and Catherine 42 when Alexander was born. William was a railway engine driver and some of his children also worked on the railway. William died while Alexander was a child. Alexander became 91188 Private A. Cragghill of the 13th Battalion The King's (Liverpool) Regiment. He was killed on the 28th March 1918. His age was given as unknown but he was probably aged 19. He has no known grave. His name is recorded on Bay 3 of the Arras Memorial, in France, as well as the Natland Memorial. Victory Medal Alexander Cragghill was entitled to the Victory medal. This medal was awarded to all who received the 1914 Star or 1914-15 Star and to those who received the British War Medal. Eligibility for this award consisted of having been mobilised and having served in any of the theatres of operations, or at sea, between midnight 4th/5th August, 1914, and midnight, 11th/12th November,1918.

British War Medal Alexander Cragghill was entitled to the British War Medal for service in World War One. This British Empire campaign medal was issued for services between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918. The medal was automatically awarded in the event of death on active service before the completion of this period. 6

Confirmation 2015 Confirmation Group for young people starts on Sunday 6th September at the Vicarage from 5pm ~ 6.30pm and will run weekly. Manna House Buy a brick for £1 to help us make Castle Lodge a place of service and safety. The bricks represent the process we are embarking on to refurbish Castle Lodge for Manna House. They are cardboard bricks with our logo and charity number and a place for the purchaser to sign on the front. We will build a wall with all the signed ‘bricks’ to show the progress of the project. The more we sell the more money to pay for the repairs which are estimated to cost thousands! When we apply for grants and funding, we will have to prove that we at the grass roots are making a true effort to raise funds too and not just there with our begging bowls! We would like to encourage all supporters of the work of Manna House to become involved and connected with this vital project, which will make such a difference to everyone’s lives. Boxes of Hope, Cumbria Launch of 2015 Shoebox Campaign and an Invitation to You Yes, it’s that time of year already, when people throughout Cumbria are thinking of filling shoeboxes for Boxes of Hope, Cumbria, our local shoebox charity, to provide a bit of happiness for children in Romania who would otherwise have nothing or very little at Christmas. This is our third year as a Registered Charity. As a humanitarian aid organisation, we have been greatly encouraged by the tremendous support from local people – not only filling a shoebox, but also raising money for Tinca School. The benefits of being a “local” charity are that a team from Cumbria (all self funded) takes the shoeboxes, and brings pictures and stories back of the children who receive them. Also, we are all volunteers and have no staff to pay, so any surplus funding goes towards longer term educational support for these children. Children and adults alike love to fill a shoebox – it is a simple and fun thing to do, doesn’t have to cost a lot of money, and it really does make a difference to a child who has none of the basics we take for granted. For these children there is none of the commercialisation we endure for weeks leading up to Christmas. Many of them have never in their lives had a gift. Many have never had a toy. So..... you can pick up a leaflet from church, and this will give you further information about the children we help and, more importantly, how to go about filling a shoebox. It includes a boy/girl label for you to stick on your box. All the information is also on our website: boxesofhopecumbria.co.uk and on our Facebook page which you can access from our website without being a member of Facebook. In short, you obtain a medium sized shoebox (NOT a boot box) and cover it with bright wrapping paper. Decide whether your box is for a boy or a girl, then fill your box with basic hygiene and stationery items, warm hat/scarf/ gloves/socks, a few toys or games, sweets and a £2 donation which goes towards the essential costs of getting the shoeboxes from Cumbria to 8

The checked shoeboxes leave the UK on November 17th, in time for our team going out in early December to give them out. And now for a special invitation – Nicu Gal, who leads our partner charity in Romania, is coming to the UK to show us photos and tell us more about the children he helps, with your support. A Teaching Day with Bishop James This year Bishop James will continue the ‘What is …? series with an in depth look at ‘Discipleship’ under the headings ‘Calling’ ‘Commitment’ and ‘Cost’. ‘What is Discipleship’ will be offered in four locations Carlisle, Barrow, Kendal and Workington, each day will last from 9am to 2pm. Its aim is to build confidence in the Christian faith, and it is intended to complement the teaching that already goes on so faithfully in our Parishes and Deaneries. Everyone will be most welcome. BABY FRIENDLY BAKING SESSIONS IN THE VILLAGE HALL, NATLAND From September 11th I'll be starting a new weekly parent and baby group at the Village Hall with my business partner, Gwen. We're two mums, who during our maternity leave, started a new business this May called Baby-Friendly Baking. It has been incredibly well received with us gaining over 3000 likes on facebook within 2 weeks of publishing our page. We are running regular term time courses in the small hall from Friday 11th September from 1.30pm to 2.30pm. Our classes are suitable for babies and toddlers, however, it's particularly relevant for babies of a weaning age. They contain lots of singing and playing with lovely toys while we demonstrate a different, healthy, baby-friendly bake each week. Everyone gets a copy of the recipe to build up a portfolio and we also sell ingredient packs for the bake of the day. Everyone gets to sample the bake too. The sessions are £7.00 per family, not per child when paying on the day. If you book in advance, which is advised, and most useful to us, it’s £6.00 per session. The first 7 week course starting on Sept 11th is £42.00. A prayer for the beginning of a new academic year Loving God, may we explore together the territory of knowledge; may we learn together the mysteries of truth; may we share together the joy of friendship; may we release in each other the spark of creativity; and may we always remember that you, the author of all knowledge, goodness,

God for all, you reached out to the world in your Son Jesus Christ. Help us to reach out in faith and love and witness to all. God for all, you send your Holy Spirit to empower and gift your Church. By your Spirit help us, grow in unity, grow as followers of Jesus Christ, and grow your kingdom in Cumbria and in this world. Amen .

Angels ministered to you in your temptation and trial: be present, we pray, to all who are in trouble or oppression. Angels announced your resurrection to Mary Magdalene: fill us with the assurance of your risen power.
