The Portrait—Part 38 May 12/13, 2012 John 13:18-38 Following the Message

1) 13:18 Judas was not an accident or a failure in God’s plan. Jesus deliberately selected this man to walk with him, even though he knew he would betray him. 2) 13:19 The fact Jesus knew all this in advance and that it fit with the Scriptures helped the disciples to believe after the fact . 3) 13:20 Jesus did not want Judas’ treachery to weaken His disciples’ faith. He wanted to encourage them that their call was by no means affected by the defection of a betrayer. 4) 13:21 Judas was exposed to the same spiritual privileges as the other disciples, yet they did him no good. 5) 13:22 Judas covered his tracks so well that not one of the others suspected him. 6) 13:26 When Jesus gave bread to Judas, it was interpreted as an act of honor. 7) 13:27 Once Judas left the room, he sealed his fate. He passed the point of no return. 8) Judas was living proof of Christ’s patience, mercy, and loving-kindness. Judas showed how Satan will always be at work among God’s people. Judas proved the deadliness of hypocrisy. 9) 13:31-32 The Cross became the supreme glory of God because the Son completely carried out the will of the Father. 10) 13:33 To the disciples Jesus was speaking of the fact that they were unprepared to follow him but would rejoin him later (14:3). To the Jews he made no such promise because of their unbelief. 11) 13:34 With the coming of the Holy Spirit, love would have a new power in the lives of the apostles.

12) 1.

Two practical ways Christians can evidence love for each other: Be willing to apologize and seek forgiveness—What causes sharp, bitter disputes are not doctrinal differences, but the unloving manner in which those differences are handled. Being willing to apologize to those whom we have offended is crucial to preserving the unity of the body of Christ. Reconciliation is a prerequisite to worshiping God. 2. Grant forgiveness—In light of the eternal forgiveness that comes through the cross, Christians should be eager to forgive the temporal offenses committed against them. Because God’s love has transformed believers’ hearts, they are able to extend that love to others in forgiveness. (The Mark of the Christian, Francis Schaeffer) 12) 13:35 Jesus gave the world the right to judge if someone is a Christian based on whether or not that person sincerely loves other Christians. 13) 13:36 Peter's question illustrates that we may receive instruction, and yet take in very little of it…even more so when it clashes with our preconceptions. 14) 13:37-38 Surely the outstanding lesson for us in connection with the fall of Peter is this: “Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12).
