FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 16:1 Greatest danger we confront as a result of the world's opposition is apostasy 16:2 A pressing first century threat was expulsion from the synagogue. Outcasts were cut off from all religious, social, and economic aspects. They were branded as traitors to their people and their God, and they faced the likely consequence of losing both their families and their jobs.
2) Concerning righteousness--Not only does the Spirit convict unbelievers of their sin, but also of the necessity of having the perfect righteousness of Christ. 3) Concerning judgment--Satan is already under judgment; the sentence is fixed and permanent. There are only two possible responses to the work of the Spirit: repentance or rejection. 16:13 The second function of the Holy Spirit is to lead us to fuller comprehension.
16:2 The foolishness of serving a false god by murdering God’s people reveals the depths to which sinfulness blankets the minds of the lost.
Because of this theme of the finality of the revelation of God in Jesus Christ, the true church rejects the claims of still further revelation.
16:4 There was a sense of assurance knowing that what was happening to the disciples was not outside Jesus' knowledge or His control.
The Holy Spirit is our Teacher. He teaches us the truths we need to know, when we need them, and when we are ready/able to receive them.
16:5-6 The disciples' questions were more of a protest, pressing the issue to ascertain what Jesus' plans really were. There was little concern about His future; they were interested mainly in their own futures.
Development of New Testament Scriptures: The Spirit would remind the authors of what Jesus had taught them. This gives us the four Gospels. The Spirit would also “guide” them into all truth. The result is the Epistles. “He will show you things to come.” This provides the prophetic Scriptures, especially Revelation.
16:7 Two reasons why the Holy Spirit did not come until after Christ’s resurrection/ascension: 1) the Spirit’s ministry is to reveal the person and works of Christ. 2) the Father gave the Spirit to the church to vindicate the Son’s faithfulness (John 7:39; Galatians 3:14). 16:7 Jesus insists it is better to be alive now, after the coming of the Spirit. 16:8 One of the Holy Spirit’s ministries is to convict the world. The Spirit works on the minds of the unsaved to show them the truth of God for what it is. 16:9-11 The Holy Spirit convicts concerning 3 things: 1) Concerning sin--Refers not to sin in general, but specifically to the ultimate sin of refusing to believe in Jesus Christ.
It is our job to witness; it is the Spirit’s job to convict. 16:14-15 The Spirit worked in the apostles’ minds so that they could perceive, understand, and teach about the Savior GREEK WORDS Skandalizō—stumbling; literally the ‘bait’ in a trap Elenxei—to present or expose facts, to convince of the truth Kekritai—condemned; expresses a settled state
