ESE Survey Each year, the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) surveys parents of children with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) to determine how well your child’s school is partnering with you and promoting your involvement in your child’s education. All states must collect this data as a part of their State Performance Plan, as required under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Your feedback is important to helping the state and local school systems continue improving educational programs for children with special needs. Individualized paper surveys will be sent home with students on February 1, 2018. From now until May 31, 2018, parents of children with disabilities receiving exceptional student education services in Pre-K through twelfth grade are encouraged to fill out the survey and return it using the postagepaid envelope that was provided. Parents can also access the survey online at www.esesurvey.com. The survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. If you do not have access to a computer and would like to take the survey online, please let us know.

UCHS & District Teacher of the Year—CSM Kenneth North Command Sargent Major Kenneth North, JROTC Instructor, was nominated by fellow teachers to represent UCHS at the district level as the Teacher of the Year. At the banquet held last week, it was announced the he was chosen as the District Teacher of the Year and would now compete at the state level later this year. 1. What degrees or certifications qualify you to teach? Degrees or certificates that directly relate to my teaching are: AA from American Military University, Small Group Leader Instructor Training Course, Total Army Instructor Training Course, Graduate of United States Sergeants Major Academy, JROTC Certification. 2. What do you teach? Leadership Education Training 1 (LET1) of the JROTC program. It encompasses 38 separate lessons, 27 of which are about self-awareness and becoming a better learner. 3. What motivated you to teach? I was motivated to teach because I love to learn and get just as much enjoyment watching others learn as well. 4. What is your definition of a teacher? A teacher is someone who connects with their pupils in a way that shows them you care. You are not only an instructor of knowledge but an encourager, problem solver, and mentor. 5. What piece of advice do you have for other teachers? The advice I have followed for both my military career and now in teaching is that passion and drive is what you need to be good at what you are doing. If you ever lose + motivation, do the right thing and go find it again somewhere else. Your students and peers can tell when that you lose your passion for your job. 6. What does your future in teaching look like? I don't know what my future holds. I have been teaching professionally for over 15 years and if I lose my passion for it, I'll move on. 7. What has been your most memorable moment in teaching? A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to work with Mrs Harrison and her ESE students. They taught me so much about how people are people no matter what skills they have or don't have. My most memorable moment was watching them wait in my room to present the Colors for a baseball game. We had practiced a lot, but they were nervous, like a paratrooper on his first jump. I called them all together in a huddle, calmed them down, and they broke with, "TEAM WORK". It was the first time they were part of a team. They were in heaven and so was I.

Non-Instructional Employee of the Year—Robin Southern

Mrs. Robin has worked on the custodial staff for the past two years. She feels honored to have been nominated by her co-workers to represent the school at the district level. When asked what she loves about UCHS, she said, “I love working alongside the teachers, staff, and students and helping to brighten their work day.”

Science The 55th annual Florida Junior Science Engineering and Humanities Symposium was held January 28th-30th at the University of Florida. Alex Perez was one of twenty 11th and 12th grade students selected from researchers across the state to give a poster presentation of his project on the Analysis of the HBG2-4kb DNase I Hypersensitive Site Before and After the Knockout of the HBD-1kb Region in the Beta-globin Locus. One poster presenter was selected to represent Florida at the National Science Symposium. Parents, We are having an increase in the Flu virus in our county. Below are some guidelines to decrease the spread of both viruses.

1. Do not send your child to school if they are sick with flu-like illness. Symptoms often are fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, headaches, fatigue, and can include vomiting and diarrhea. 2. If they have a fever, they cannot return to school until they are fever free without the assistance of fever-reducing medication such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin (Ibuprofen) for 24 hours. 3. Don’t send them back to school until they are free of cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, headaches, fatigue, vomiting and diarrhea for 24 hours. 4. The flu vaccine is safe and the best way to protect your child from the flu. It can help them to not get the flu at all, or to at least have milder and shorter symptoms. If your child is not sick and has not had the flu, please take them to their Doctor, the Union County Health Department, to CVS or Walgreens for a Flu shot. But, remember it takes 2 weeks after receiving the vaccine for it to be effective in fighting the Flu. 5. Please encourage your child and all other members of the family to wash their hands frequently throughout the day and if possible to not touch their face with their hands. Please remember that if your child becomes ill with any of the above symptoms or a fever at school, they will be sent home. Your cooperation in picking them up in a timely manner is appreciated. Thank you for your help in stopping the spread of the FLU! Sincerely, Sandra K.
