Jesus said to his disciples: "You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father."
1. UNDERSTAND IT! Seasoned To add flavor to something, usually food.
Trampled
Glorify
To be stepped on.
To make clearer of the greatness. In this case to make the greatness of God clearer.
2. EXPLORE IT!
Jesus told us to be Salt and Light of the world. He wants us as Christians to season and light the world, meaning to make life better and be a good example for others in the world. Food is bland without salt such as life is meaningless without the love of God. Being the light of the world means to bring truth to others by glorifying God and by doing good deeds. Jesus wants us to bring meaning and love to the rest of the world.
3. CONNECT IT!
Jesus wants us to be salt and light of the world, but He also wants us to remain true salt and keep our flavor by being good Christians. In teaching us to be salt and light for the world, Jesus also reminds us to continue to have God in our hearts. Salt is useless if it is not salty, and light does not shine if it is blocked. We cannot be salt of the Earth if we do not understand or live the teachings of Jesus. We cannot say that we are the light of the world if we do not have any light within us.
4. LIVE IT! [ ROLE MODEL ] Role Model: a person looked to by others as an example to be imitated. You can practice being the salt and light of the world this week by doing something nice for someone you know. It can be your parents, someone you know at school, or someone in TNTT. You can also pray for them in your nightly prayers as well. If possible, see if you can do something nice to someone who is having a hard time at school, or help others you know has trouble with homework that you are good at. It might be hard at first, but continue doing this even after this week and soon enough it will just come easily and you will be the salt and light of the world that Jesus wants you to be.
5. REMEMBER IT! “Your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” (Matthew 5: 16)
6. PRAY IT! Dear God, thank you for Your teachings today. Please let us continue to live as light and salt of the world like You want us to be. Let us add flavors like love, kindness, and service to other peoples’ lives to show them the love You have for us all. Amen.
