Journey with The Walking School Bus across Uganda where we will work with 3 of our participating schools and communities to improve Access, Nutrition, and Curriculum. This three-prong approach helps students get to school, ensures they’re well fed and improves their curriculum. As part of the TWSB volunteer team, your work will support the implementation of our approach through a hands-on experience in building infrastructure, collecting data, teaching, and/or monitoring and evaluate projects.

This trip aims to benefit our partnered schools and communities through the implementation of our holistic approach to educational access while also providing our volunteers with a unique experience to travel abroad and positively impact their surroundings and themselves. We will work with our participating schools to: 1) Improve access to education and curriculum by building a Solar Power Classroom and finishing the construction of a 5-classroom block. Both of these projects ensure students are studying indoors with access to the highly impactful curriculum. 2) Improve access to nutrition by implementing our nutritional program which includes: a. Implementing a community supported agriculture program (CSA) at Putti Village which the communities and schools will maintain. The CSA Gardens help our schools in two distinct ways: incorporate agricultural best practices and education into the classroom. b. Building water catchment systems to provide a much-needed water source for the village in order to maintain the garden, chicken coops, and drinking water during the dry season. 3) Improve our School Bus model through qualitative and quantitative data collection with students and teachers from the Yonatan Netanyahu Memorial School.

Arrival Arrive at the Entebbe airport at approximately 9 PM on March 20th. We will be picked up by the travel company we work with: African Adventures and driven to Nabagoye Hill (approximately a 5-hour drive traveled at night to skip traffic) which will be home base for 12 days. We will settle into our 18-person guest house.

D Following breakfast and a trip meeting, explore the natural beauty that surrounds Nabagoye Village. While exploring and getting orientated with the land, we will visit two of the schools we work with: Semei Kakungulu High School and Hadassah Primary School. After lunch, head to Mbale town where we will go to the grocery store, use the bank, and explore. We will also purchase additional materials we need for our projects. Enjoy traditional Ugandan cuisine back at the guest house for dinner.

D Wake up to spectacular sunrise views from the Nabagoye lookout before driving to Putti Village where our team will meet the community, monitor and evaluate our preexisting projects, and continue the construction of a classroom. Lunch at Putti. Finish classrooms, painting, and begin construction of water catchment systems. TWSB researchers will collect baselines data for access model while Educators work with teachers to facilitate the integration of updated lessons plans and curriculum which leverage technology in Solar Power Classroom.

D Arrive at Putti Village and continue construction of classrooms and water catchment system. TWSB researchers will continue with data collection and agricultural specialists will focus on CSA gardens. Educators will teach and assist with lesson plan integration. Late lunch at the guesthouse. In the evening, enjoy an incredible Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat Synagogue service with the whole community; all faiths are welcome and attend the services. The service will have a remarkable Ugandan twist including drums and dancing.

D *The communities we work with observe the Sabbath, as such, we do not work. After breakfast, journey to Sipi Falls for spectacular rock climbing. After hiking the Sipi Falls loop, as well as venturing into the remarkable cave formations and exploring the impressive fauna and flora, return to Sipi camp for lunch. Following lunch, we will stop in Mbale town, visit the market and purchase project materials, crafts, and souvenirs.

D Following breakfast, travel back to Putti Village to complete the classroom compound. While this takes place, our research team will help to monitor and evaluate the chicken coops, water catchment systems, and CSA gardens. At the same time, TWSB educators will work with teachers from Yonatan Netanyahu Memorial School to finalize integration of experiential learning curriculum. Meanwhile, the team will prepare the intranet technology which will be used in the new school block. We will head back to the Guest House for lunch. After lunch, walk to S.K High School to work with members of TWSB’s Ugandan team on the solar power classroom!

After breakfast, return to S.K High School to continue working on the solar power classroom and initiate construction of desks and benches. TWSB educators will start pretests for fluency, comprehension and, data collection. and classroom teaching. After lunch at the guesthouse, we will continue with our projects. Educators will continue data collection and if time permits, will work with teachers and students to further teach the SiMBi and intranet software. The construction team will continue with desks, benches, and walls of the classroom. After a busy day, enjoy a scenic walk around Mbale Town where we’ll stay for dinner.

Return to S.K. High School where we will continue our projects. Solar Power Classroom team will continue with the walls, desks, chairs, and solar. The literacy team will continue testing, data collection and teaching lessons. Nutrition researchers will work with TWSB Uganda team to monitor and evaluate projects at Nabagoye Village (where S.K High School is). Projects include chicken coops and CSA garden. After lunch and the completion of the day’s projects, head out on a spectacular hike through interfaith coffee farms.

Following an early morning, we will say our farewells to members of Nabagoye and S.K High School. Then we will head to Entebbe Botanical Gardens which overlook Lake Victoria before flying home.

O Total cost per person for the trip is $1350.00 CDN which includes all food, transportation, and accommodations (excludes airfare to and from Entebbe). In addition, we are asking that each participant raise $2000.00 to contribute to the projects in Uganda. 100% of funds raised go to our projects, in fact, our projects cannot be implemented without these funds. TWSB will help you meet your fundraising goals by creating fundraising pages for each participant. You will be issued a tax receipt for the full $2000 raised. If you would like to join for this remarkable adventure or have any questions, please contact us. t
