Journey with The Walking School Bus across Uganda where we will work with 3 of our participating schools and communities to improve Access, Nutrition, and Curriculum. This three-prong approach helps students get to school, ensures they’re well fed and improves their curriculum. As part of the TWSB volunteer team, your work will support the implementation of our approach through a hands-on experience in building infrastructure, collecting data, teaching, and/or monitoring and evaluate projects.

This trip aims to benefit our partnered schools and communities through the implementation of our holistic approach to educational access while also providing our volunteers with a unique experience to travel abroad and positively impact their surroundings and themselves. We will work with our participating schools to: 1) Improve access to education and curriculum by building a Solar Power Classroom and finishing the construction of a 5-classroom block. Both of these projects ensure students are studying indoors with access to the highly impactful curriculum. 2) Improve access to nutrition by implementing our nutritional program which includes: a. Implementing a community supported agriculture program (CSA) at Putti Village which the communities and schools will maintain. The CSA Gardens help our schools in two distinct ways: incorporate agricultural best practices and education into the classroom. b. Building water catchment systems to provide a much-needed water source for the village in order to maintain the garden, chicken coops, and drinking water during the dry season. 3) Improve our School Bus model through qualitative and quantitative data collection with students and teachers from the Yonatan Netanyahu Memorial School.
Arrival Arrive at the Entebbe airport at approximately 9 PM on March 20th. We will be picked up by the travel company we work with: African Adventures and driven to Nabagoye Hill (approximately a 5-hour drive traveled at night to skip traffic) which will be home base for 12 days. We will settle into our 18-person guest house.

Lunch at Putti. Finish classrooms, painting, and begin construction of water catchment systems. TWSB researchers will collect baselines data for access model while Educators work with teachers to facilitate the integration of updated lessons plans and curriculum which leverage technology in Solar Power Classroom.
D Arrive at Putti Village and continue construction of classrooms and water catchment system. TWSB researchers will continue with data collection and agricultural specialists will focus on CSA gardens. Educators will teach and assist with lesson plan integration. Late lunch at the guesthouse. In the evening, enjoy an incredible Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat Synagogue service with the whole community; all faiths are welcome and attend the services.
