The part of my project I have begun to explore in detail through the complex material assemblage is the section through the cantilevered truss which supports the gantry crane on one side and the workshop/greenhouse accommodation on the other. The particular parts of this that I have resolved in the most detail are aspects of construction which occur at level of human interaction and exchange, exploring further the themes from my initial conceptual work such as the value of materials, the idea of materials as a representation of memory, and how memories can be recalled or created through the process of exchange of different kinds. In this study I have explored these details by breaking down the overall structural build-up into its constituent pars , focussing on the ‘DIY’ user controlled cladding of the truss with reclaimed site timber,and the intermediate space between the street and the workshop. There are elements of this section I am yet to resolve, though I have indicated initial research into how these might work through precedent studies.

The primary structure, except for where long sections are needed, will be constructed from reclaimed steel as explained in the technology report. This structure needs to be adaptable for future use, therefore mechanical (and therefore demountable) connections using bolts, screws and washers will be necessary for joining sections together. Adapting members by welding plates to the end of sections to allow for bolted joints between different members may be necessary (see left).

PRECEDENT: Courtyard Renovation, Czech Technical University, Prague. ARCHITECT: Vyšehrad Atelier IMAGE: Detail, 1, 2010 The workshop and greenhouse spaces hang from the cantilevered truss, replicating the way the materials within the reclamation yard hang from the gantry crane. I have not fully resolved this at this point, but an informative precedent is the Courtyard Renovation at the Czech Technical University, a large open multifunctional workspace which includes lightweight meeting rooms hung from a truss which spans the ceiling. The RSJs which suspend the units are welded to the truss. These units are not suspended far from the truss in this building, whereas the distance of suspension is significantly longer in my scheme, and also suspends units at 2 levels. I am considering using RSJs which span from the truss to the ground to ensure stability, but need to design a support which holds the units in place at each floor level, and also carefully detail the seal around the junctions where the supports cut through the floors and ceilings.
