I begin exploring the structural support of the roof in 3D with the aim of achieving a ‘constructed’ aesthetic, where the seperate elements of the rib beams and columns are visually clear, rather than merging into one another, and where the fixing of the two is apparent to the user. I believe this expresses the complex roof structure more predominantly and also provides the user with a sense of knowledge and awe. Viewing the completed construction it would appear that the two ends of the rib beams that meet are fastened together through the use of large bolts, and that their junction is supported by two seperate columns leaning into each other holding the structure up in almost a crutch, which altogether feels rather simple. This is achieved in the formwork at the top of the column where it resembles a slice of the beam that then appears to sit supported between the columns. The column actually exists as a whole singular element, being a composite of steel and concrete that would be pre-cast to ensure a high qulaity finish, as with the rib beams which would also be pre-stressed to improve structural strength. The bolt recesses in the the concrete ribs are left uncapped to indicate the method of construction, and given a sharp edge so to appear to puncture the solid element of the beam.
