Voyeuristic Detail of the Archivists Thread

The Detail here describes how a ‘voyeuristic’ detail may be achieved. A one way screen, that effectively acts like a net curtain, allows a view into a space from one side, but is prohibited from the other. As part of a network of passageways that occupy the service risers of the existing and proposed building, the detail embodies the metaphorical idea that the archivist maintains a control over their users via perscribing what exactly goes into the archive. A metallic finish and aesthetic is desired in the new build, to constrast with the existing ancient context.

The network of occupied service risers spreading the archivists influence throughout the collection and physically connecting parts of the building together in a more subversive action.

Existing Masonry construction tower. Mainly stone, refer to condition survey for detail. 600mm In-situ reinforced concrete vertical in-situ ribs fixed to in-situ concrete ring beam. 100mm rigid insulation, DPM to back of 150mm prefabricated concrete cladding panels. Panels hung on in-situ ring beam and rib structure and fixed with steel bolts fixings 3mm cold rolled steel box section sub frame, attached at 600mm centres to in-situ reinforced concrete rib and ring beam structural supports with mechanical fixing. 3mm steel box section framework. 18mm MDF manufactured board fixed to L - section steel fixed back to concrete structural frame. Vapour barrier and rubber seals to ensure air resistance. 18mm MDF manufactured board fixed to L - section steel fixed back to concrete structural frame Black draft curtain, tensioned over timber frame fixed back to 3mm box section sub frame with mechanical fixings to allow for future maintenance. Allows free air penetration to ventilate research facility, with only limited light transmittance. 3mm cold rolled steel box section sub frame, attached at 600mm centres to in-situ reinforced concrete rib and ring beam structural supports with mechanical fixing 3mm steel coping, incorporating light fitting. 3mm perforated mild steel wall lining fixed to steel subframe with M5 bolts, washers and steel cap to match Paint finish. Allows future access. Laminated wood desk surface. Fixed back to framework via steel sections. 12mm steel grated surface with flush finishes on L - section steel frame on neoprene gasket to provide acoustic attenuation. Supported on tapered steel sections fixed back to conrete strucutral frame. Metal Balustrading, 5mm tension steel cable fixed back to strucutre with steel uprights. Mechanical fixings.
