RASHI ON: A daily portion each day: That which was needed each day they should collect, and they should not collect today for tomorrow.
As a response to יִ ְשׂ ָראֵ ל-'בְּ נֵיs complaint about lack of food in the desert, ' הgave them the ְשׂלָו (Slav), which is a kind of bird, which came down in the evening, and the ( מָ ןMun). The מָ ןwas a special food which was delivered daily from Heaven every morning and was covered with dew. יִ ְשׂ ָראֵ ל- בְּ נֵיwere commanded to gather each day only the amount of מָ ןeach person needed for that day. If anyone collected more than they needed it would rot away before the next מָ ןcame down. Only on Friday were they allowed to collect a double amount of מָ ןfor ַשׁבָּ תas well. This is where the Halacha to have two challot under a cloth and on top of a board comes from. A layer of dew fell in the morning on the ground, then ‘ הsent the מָ ן, after which ‘ הsent another layer of dew, to keep the מָ ןfresh until it was collected by each person. That is why we have the חַ לָה (Challah) cloth and the חַ לָהboard. All these laws regarding the מָ ןwere a test for יִ ְשׂ ָראֵ ל-בְּ נֵי to see if they trusted ' הenough to realise that He was going to supply them with מָ ןeach day without them having to keep supplies for future days. מ ֶֹשׁה ֹ was commanded by ' הto keep a portion of מָ ןas a testimony to the fact that ' הalways looks after us and supplies us with our needs. This ַשׁבָּ תis known as ירה ָ ַשׁבָּ ת ִשׁ- the 'Shabbat of Song' as the בְּ נֵי יִ ְשׂ ָראֵ לsang to ' הafter they had successfully crossed the ( יַם סוּףYam Suf). This Shabbat is Tu B’Shevat – The New Year for Trees.
