Parshas Matos By Rabbi Shmuel Gluck: Moshe Rabbeinu’s dialogue with the B’nei Gad and Reuven incorporated many subtle nuances. I’d like to discuss one of them. A er he asked them to fight with the rest of Klal Yisroel for Eretz Yisroel, he said that they could go back to their land on the other side of the Yarden (Jordan river). They responded, Va’avo’decho Ya’avru, Kol Chalutz, Leifnei Hashem, Ka’asher Adonei Dover, your servants will cross, the en re army, before Hashem, just as you commanded us. Why did they include the words, Lifnei Hashem, when agreeing to fight? The Akeida explains that a part of Moshe Rabbeinu’s message was that their decisions should also incorporate what Hashem wants, and not only what they want. They understood Moshe Rabbeinu’s message, and included Lifnei Hashem in their response. They understood that whatever they would do, it would be standing before Hashem. Many people say, “Boruch Hashem”, or, “Im Yirtze Hashem”, in every sentence. This o en frustrates others. Whether I become frustrated depends on why they say it. Some say it to feel, and sound, Frum. Others say it a er a stressful incident “worked out”. They intend to purge themselves of the guilt of not having Bitochon during the en re incident. These are superficial reasons, and may frustrate those who hear it. However, there are others who say it as o en as possible, because they want to remind themselves to be comfortable with whatever took place whether, or not, they understand it. They say it to remind themselves that whatever they choose should be consistent with what Hashem wants. This third reason, the appropriate one, should be a reminder for people to consider their responsibility to remember Hashem, as the Mitzvoh of wearing Tzitzis, should serve as a reminder for Klal Yisroel to remember the Mitzvohs. People need constant reminders to stay focused, and invoking Hashem’s name is a simple, and effec ve, reminder The author can be contacted at
