The light coloured concrete panelling with clear glass aggregate, creates a tactile surface when sensed up close. The colour of the concrete is lighter to brighten the lower parts of the building and public square. Concrete was used to give a sense of solidity, connecting the building to the ground and rooting it in place.

3

The form was inspired by traditional cloisters, that create a buffer zone blurring the boundary between outside and in. Due to the design, the cladding is not a thermal skin allowing for perforations and openings that let natural and artificial light filter through (View Section Page 3 for detail). Each opening is a maximum width of 3 metres. This encourages interaction and promotes Urban (Co) Lab’s ethos of collaboration.

The light grey, corrugated aluminium sheeting is used to create continuity and texture to the facade. As a material that won’t be touched, the focus is on creating a sense of rhythm that defines the block. Openings are treated like punctures and the first floor windows can be drawn back into the building fabric, to allow a visual connection and verbal communication with the public square.

City Scale:

This facade is about the form and aesthetic of the tower on Sheffields skyline. The aspiration is for a piece that sits and cantilevers above the urban block. Currently the highest point sits at 25 metres above ground level. The intention is to develop and raise this further.

Following the artists relief panelling, two sections on the ground floor will be collaborative pieces. This is to allow others to contribute to the facade and character of the public space which is in keeping with Urban (Co)Lab’s ethos.

How does the viewing tower, as Urban (Co) Lab’s marker in the skyline, announce itself to Sheffield?

Medium-High Cost

Proposed Materials

Inspired by the materiality of Frank Gehrys architecture, the viewing tower is constructed of reflective metal shingles.

The aspiration is for the viewing tower to have a similar impression on the skyline as the Parasite, becoming a node within the city.

What character and aesthetic do the buildings have within the block? When you enter the public square how is the block held as one?

The detailing and materiality of the facade is divided horizontally into three key elements.

How does the ground floor encourage interaction between built form and human touch?

Project Orange The use and composition of distinctly different materials unifies the character of the housing, creating an aesthetic that’s traceable throughout the scheme. The intention is to follow similar ‘layering’ principles.

DRMM Although difficult to see, the use of recycled glass aggregate within the brick creates a tactile quality that invites people to touch the building.
