The detailing of these projects is exemplary of the desired effect of combining concrete with timber. The school project especially through the ‘honesty’ of detailing, as a timber box is literally inserted into the heavy concrete frame (400mm RC Slab) there is no thermal break in the concrete so cold bridging is avoided with 100mm wood fibreboard with larch boarding to all interior surfaces. This structural build up does however seem a little excessive for the size of the building. The lack of thermal break in the concrete also means that concrete cannot be exposed on the interior which might be beneficial aesthetically as well as providing good thermal mass as a passive climatic control.

Detailing The façade has been detailed to give the impression of a timber box slotted into the timber structure; this is emphasized by the 50mm shadow gap between the materials. A structural thermal break in the concrete avoids thermal bridging and addition insulation at floor and ceiling levels is added where the façade breaks past this line. Flush levels provide continuity between inside and outside spaces and barrier free access to the balcony.
