Nau mai, hoki mai Dear Parents, Last week I had the pleasure of watching 40 students from our local schools compete in the Quad Schools Speech Competition. The focus this year was on delivering a speech using technology to support their topic. The manner in which all of them confidently presented, is a credit to the amount of hours they put into preparing for the competition. At such a young age, many of them have futures in public speaking. Remember Jacinda Ardern has a degree in communications!
Kapahaka Festival 28 Sept Ohoka School Hall A reminder that tickets for the festival are available at the door on the Thursday morning. Parents need to stay for the whole session out of respect for all schools performing. Our session starts at 10.30am and finishes at 12.40pm. Loburn is performing at 10.50am. All students involved would have received a notice on Tuesday. Pet Day 30 October For those families that have not experienced a Pet Day before, it is something very much to look forward to. As well as showing pets, students will be making art works, collage, flower decorations, lego designs etc. The staff will confirm the schedule tomorrow and give it out next week. The holidays will be a good time for those students with pets to get to know them better and train them up. A highlight of the day are rural demonstrations. If anyone has some ideas for this, can they please contact the school. In the past we have had dog obedience demonstrations, horse jumping and duck trials (true!). I am away in Queenstown next week at the New Zealand Principals Conference. If you have any questions while I am away, please see the class teacher and then Mr Reed or Miss Milburn.
Congratulations to Audrey Woolford 1st year 5 and Annie Airey who got 2nd in year 7, This week is Maori Language Week, te wiki o te reo māori. Weeks like this bring the Maori language more into the spotlight and the challenge for us is not to make it just a week long event, but a continuous focus on te reo throughout the year. I have attached a sheet in the newsletter with some basic phrases. Next week a large group of students are performing in the Kids for Kids Concert in Christchurch. Mrs Steele has been working with the group this term in readiness for the night. These events are colourful and fun nights and I urge all parents with children involved to come along.
Our Community of Learning has confirmed a teacher only day for Thursday November 16. All schools in the community, including Rangiora High School will be closed for instruction that day. We have timed it for the day before Show Day. Good luck to all students competing in the Sefton Riding Centre Primary Schools Show Jumping on Saturday. A reminder that school finishes at 1pm on Friday 15 September. Hot food will be served at 12.30pm. The teaching staff will be spending the afternoon planning for term 4. The bus will leave school at 1.10pm Hei konā rā Stuart
