How Great the Rescue November 17/18, 2012 Romans 5 FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1) Will I allow the reality of pain and suffering in our world to drive me away from God or to God? 2) The analogy of Romans 5 links Christ with Adam—in each case, a far-reaching effect on countless others was generated through one man. 3) 5:12 The unbeliever has reason to fear all three deaths. Spiritual death prevents his earthly happiness; physical death will bring an end to opportunity for salvation; and eternal death will bring everlasting punishment. 4) 5:13-14 It was not because of men’s sinful acts in breaking the Mosaic Law (which they did not yet have), but because of their sinful nature that all men from Adam until Moses were subject to death. 5) 5:15 When used of what is given to God, the term “free gift” refers to that which is right and acceptable in His sight; when used of that which is given by God, as here, it refers to that which is given completely apart from human merit. 6) 5:16 Christ’s justification is far greater than Adam’s condemnation. 7) 5:16 Two very practical truths: • God hates sin so much that it took only one sin to condemn the entire human race and separate them from Him. It was not that Adam’s first sin was worse than others he committed or worse than men have committed since. It was simply that his first sin was sin. At the time, eating the forbidden fruit was the only sin that Adam and Eve could have committed, because God had placed but one restriction on them. Any other sin would have had the same effect…

sufficient to damn the whole human race. Greater even than God’s hatred of sin is His love for us. Despite the fact that God hates sin so much that any one sin could damn the human race, His love toward mankind is so great that He provides not only for the redemption of one man from one sin, but for the redemption of all men from all sins. Jesus Christ took upon Himself the sins of the whole world.
8) 5:17 We are still plagued with sin, but sin is no longer the nature of or the master over the believer. In Christ we are no longer victims of sin but are victors over sin. 9) 5:18 Adam’s disobedience caused him and his descendants to be made sinners by nature and constitution. In the same way, but with the exact opposite effect, Christ’s obedience causes those who believe in Him to be made righteous by nature and constitution.
