October 23, 2016 Pastor Kenton Rahn Church Leadership 101 - Part 2 Establishing Godly Leadership in the Local Church Titus 1:5-9 5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and appoint elders in every city as I directed you, 6 namely, if any man is above reproach, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of dissipation or rebellion. 7 For the overseer must be above reproach as God’s steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain, 8 but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled, 9 holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict. QUALIFICATIONS FOR ELDERS Paul lists 17 Qualifications… 17 characteristics or qualities that men must have in order to be considered for the office of Elder. The characteristics are divided into three sections: Last week we covered section 1… 1. Elders must be blameless in their marriage and family life (verse 6) 1. Above reproach 2. Husband of one wife 3. Having “faithful” children, not accused of dissipation or rebellion Now let’s continue… 2. Elders must be blameless in their character and conduct (v. 7-8) There are 11 characteristics in this section - 5 negative, 6 positive. First come the vices… then the virtues. The 5 vices correspond to five areas of temptation for leaders: pride, anger, alcohol, power, and money. 4. Not self-willed 5. Not quick-tempered 6. Not addicted to wine 7. Not pugnacious 8. Not fond of sordid gain
Now Paul mentions 6 positive character traits Elders should possess. 9. Hospitable 10. Loving what is good 11. Sensible 12. Just 13. Devout 14. Self-controlled 3. Elders must be blameless in their doctrinal orthodoxy (v. 9) 15. Holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching 16. Able to exhort in sound doctrine 17. Able to refute those who contradict Two main differences between Elders and Deacons: • Elders have a teaching function built into their job description. Deacons do not. • Elders oversee the entire church. Deacons serve specific needs within the church. ELDER INTERVIEW & PRAYER We have 9 Elders currently serving on the Board: 1) Bob Abrams, 2) Nick Allen, 3) Jim Cecy, 4) Alan Christianson, 5) Andy Haussler, 6) Ryan Howard, 7) Scott Jett, 8) Adam Sheppard, 9) Mike Wilhelm.
Discussion Questions: 1. In this list of 17 Qualifications for Elders, which of the characteristics stood out to you, and why? Are there any you feel you need to work on in your own personal life? 2. How would you explain the difference between the role of an Elder and a Deacon? 3. Did you find the interview with the Elders helpful? What struck you as insightful or noteworthy? 4. How did this two-part message on Church Leadership 101 give you a greater appreciation for the Elders in our church? 5. What do you think is the greatest danger facing Campus Bible Church right now?
