Musings from the President By the time you read this, Spring is already here. March 19 is the day. Did you know: The March equinox signals the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and this is the earliest spring since 1896 - the earliest arrival of spring of our lifetime thus far! Yup, that's a fact. At the equinox, the sun crosses the celestial equator on its way north along the ecliptic. Are you ready for that? For us fair weather painters, plein air season is coming upon us. How can we prepare for plein air painting? Well, a good way is to paint trees, rocks, sea shores, and mountains before we head out for the wide open spaces. Paint lots of them. This is our vocabulary. We can increase our vocabulary by using it. If we time ourselves with a timer and set a limit, we will be forced to finish sooner. Paint for 20 minutes and stop. Paint for 40 minutes and stop. Paint for 1 hour then stop. As we paint these quick sketches, we will become better with each round. We will find ourselves focusing on large shapes and the overall composition of the picture. It does not matter if they do not come out exactly as we would like, we just keep painting. How many paintings can we can do in a sitting? In the 20 minute sketches maybe the only things we will have on the paper are the large dominant masses. That's ok. How many different large mass paintings can we do in one hour? In preparing for the plein air season you have painted 25 or 50 sketches each of rocks, trees, mountains, seashore, etc. Do you think you will be better prepared for painting outdoors? I think you will. If we concentrate on just large shapes or composition we can't help noticing a big difference when we go out in the field.... plus our vocabulary of trees, rocks, etc will increase in leaps and bounds. Give it a try... then show up for more of those plein air adventures scheduled for club members. If you can't make the club scheduled events you might also try the RenoTahoe Plain Air Painters scheduled outings.
2 The following are all quick studies and all of these paintings are small.... 5x7, 6x8, 8x10. None are set forth as examples of great paintings but as studies of trees. They are mostly knife paintings because knife painting is usually faster. Notice I tried a variety of shapes and colors. Give it a try. Happy painting everyone!

On a Sad Note Lois Pierson, twin sister of Mary Zuver and companion of Al Ferrand, died on February 3rd. Her obituary noted that in lieu of flowers, donations should be made in her name to the Sierra Watercolor Society "Art Angels." Lois lived a great and colorful life. Among other talents and accomplishments, she was a great artist, with her most recent favored mediums being oils and pastels. She was loved and will be missed by many members of the art community

Upcoming Exhibits “Inside and Out” July 1-31 at First United Methodist Church Be painting now for “Inside and Out”! Have you seen the Disney Movie? I looked it up online and learned that is it a story of a young girl whose family must move to a new city and begin a new school, etc. She has many emotions represented by characters in her imagination such as fear, anger, hope and joy . These could be represented in portraiture or abstracts. Also scenes of looking out a window, or being on the outside looking in, or straight interior scenes or exterior landscapes would all be appropriate. Linda Walker will be recruiting you to “sit the show”, co-host an evening after a musical performance in the sanctuary, help set up the grids on the 29th, hang the show on the 30th, or other duties as needed! More details, including an entry form, will be at our next club meeting and subsequent newsletter. Contact Linda Walker at

9th Annual Miniature Show: “Nevada: Don’t Fence Me In!” Our fall 9th Annual Miniature Show: “Nevada: Don’t Fence Me In!” will be featuring the theme currently being promoted with the Nevada Department of Tourism. By the time you read this newsletter, our committee will be underway obtaining a judge, requesting prize donations and preparing the prospectus. Start painting small NOW! (Remember the image cannot exceed 36 square inches.) I am dreaming of wide open spaces and big skies, or a scene with an open gate and the horses running off in the distance. Use your imagination and various mediums since we will again have 5 categories: (1) oil/acrylic, (2) water media, (3) pastel, (4) graphite/ink drawing, and (5) mixed media and others. Entry date has not been pinned down yet, but we know we will be hosting the opening reception on Friday October 14th. Contact Eileen Fuller at
