ART BIKER JOB DESCRIPTION (Role, Responsibilities and Duties), 2018 ROLE: Riding bicycles and pulling trailers packed with art materials and supplies to locations, the Art Bikers work as a team facilitating free community art activities with children, youth and others at a neighbourhood level throughout HRM. As a member of the team, your role is to contribute creative ideas for activities, participate in the provided training, lead and facilitate creative arts activities with children, youth and others in the community in a respectful and equitable manner, understand and follow the policies and procedures of the program and of Wonder’neath Art Society, and contribute to the health of the team for the duration of your contract in order to achieve the goals of the Art Bikers program. ART BIKER PROGRAM GOALS are: 1. To provide creative and engaging opportunities for community members of all ages to enjoy and connect through art-making. 2. To make Art an event that happens at a street, neighbourhood and community level. 3. To stimulate interest and participation in Community Arts and Arts-based Community Development in Halifax, Nova Scotia. An Art Bikers Handbook is provided at the Staff Orientation and details of the policies and procedures of the program and of Wonder’neath Art Society. RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the supervision of the Art Bikers Coordinator and working as part of a creative and collaborative team, you are responsible: • to know the goals of the program. • follow the policies and procedures as outlined in the Art Bikers handbook and any additional pertinent policies of Wonder’neath Art Society. • to identify and disclose to the Coordinator any obstacles or barriers (ability, availability, illness) that may impede or impact you in carrying out the work to the required capacity. • to actively and respectfully participate in trainings and team meetings over the course of the program. • to initiate, animate, and facilitate creative community art activities in public parks and other public locations within the Halifax Regional Municipality.

to center children in the development of the activities while planning for all ages to participate. to engage community residents of all ages and abilities in these activities. to liaise with community members and community organizations when required by the Coordinator. to photograph and /or videotape activities in a respectful manner asking for permission whenever possible from participants for use on social media. to report to the Coordinator any conflict with a fellow staff member that jeopardizes your ability or capacity to carry out your responsibilities. to use the Art Bikers studio space in a respectful and cooperative manner, maintaining its cleanness, security and organization. to ensure the safety and security of the program’s trailers and equipment at all times. to honour your time commitment for the FULL duration of the program. to refer to this job description as you carry out your responsibilities and duties. to seek clarification from the Art Bikers Coordinator or the 4Cs Foundation Executive Director on any part of the job description you do not understand.
DUTIES: • To facilitate an open and creative environment for children, youth and others to take part in collaborative art-making activities. • To take the initiative to engage the general public in activities at the delivery sites. • To facilitate the program in a respectful, safe, fun and creative manner. • To encourage participants in the exploration of their creativity and artistic expression. • To share your knowledge, skills and talents with participants by offering hands-on examples and skill-building directions. • To participate as an active, energetic, contributing staff member. • To equip, maintain and use the Art Bike trailers and materials ensuring the safety of yourself and others and the usefulness of all equipment. • To contribute to the healthy functioning of the team. • To reflect on and record activities in a daily log book and to contribute to the weekly debrief; to incorporate these reflections into how you carry out your work. • Additional duties as determined by the Coordinator including, for example, special events, public education opportunities, special trainings, symposia, etc. SUPERVISION: Now in its 12th year, the Art Bikers is a mobile community arts program of the 4Cs Foundation. In 2017 and for 2018, the program is being offered through an agreement with Wonder’neath Art Society.
As an Art Biker in 2018, you will be a contract employee of Wonder’neath Art Society. As such, you will be supervised by the Art Bikers Coordinator/s and the Executive Directors of Wonder’neath Art Society.
