GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Responsible for the general maintenance and repair of the automotive, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment utilized for the maintenance of the building. Maintain electrical, water and gas utilities, fixtures, lights, etc. on an on going basis in a building or surrounding grounds. May provide repairs to the building, grounds or equipment, as generally included in the building trades, such as carpenters, roofers, glaziers, painters, plumbers, masons and electricians. ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: 1. To repair automotive equipment. 2. Assists with the vehicle preventative maintenance program. 3. Repair shop and custodial equipment. 4. To assist and advise other mechanics as needed. 5. Maintains all applicable safety and code requirements. 6. Maintains inventory and requisitions supplies relative to assignments. 7. Perform tasks such as repairing or installing piping, hardware or wood products. 8. Operate mowing and snow removal equipment. 9. Inter-departmental communication and maintenance of files and records as required. 10. Other duties as required. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A working knowledge of automotive, mechanical hydraulic and pneumatic equipment; must have a thorough knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in public schools; must have a knowledge of mechanical systems (switches and breakers) as well as heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems; must possess a valid Rhode Island driver’s license; must have a knowledge of asbestos, certificate preferred; the ability to work independently with minimal supervision; the ability to readily understand and carry out directions, oral, diagram and in written form; the ability to read and work from diagrams and blueprints; creative thinking and problem solving skills necessary; the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in written form; the ability to develop an effective working relationship with staff, students and the public; manual dexterity and the ability to perform duties with an awareness of school department requirements and policies. EDUCATION: Such as maybe gained through graduation from a senior high school or equivalent (GED), supplemented by vocational or trade school training or military background preferred.
