REPORT Event: Session on ‘Vedic Mathematics’ for Slum Students Organised by: Centre for Social Innovation Date: 15 June 2016 Place: Okhla slum, Sanjay Colony, Phase-II Literacy is critical to economic development as well as individual and community wellbeing. Being in support of such a view, the members of Sociovation organized an educational session in Okhla slum, Sanjay Colony, Phase-II, with the aim of imparting basic mathematical knowledge to the children residing there. Around 15 children from classes 1 to 8 attended the session. There were very interactive sessions. First, a small test was conducted to check if the children knew basic mathematics operations like addition, subtraction and multiplication. On the basis of the results, the children were then divided in two groups: Group1- which comprised of children who had prior basic knowledge of the subject; and Group2- which consisted of children who did not. Then, the volunteers were assigned to each group to help the students. Group1was taught some skills of ‘Vedic Mathematics’ so as to enhance their calculation speed, while the focus on other group was to teach basic mathematics operations like multiplication, addition and subtraction. The children participated enthusiastically in the session, and in the process, learned new skills. The event was a great success for both the children as well as the team members. Sociovation is looking forward to organize more such events in the coming future.
