Brittany Weinblatt 8/27/15 ENC 1101.04 Reading Response #1 #3: The WIDE authors made a list of the top ten genres most frequently written by students. Make your own top ten list based on your own experience. How does it compare to the WIDE findings? If there are differences, what do you think accounts for them? The WIDE survey data showed that the top most frequently written genres are “texting, e-mail, lecture notes, academic papers, research papers, lists, instant messaging, comments on status messages or posts, status message update, and reading notes”(5). While I agree with most of the list like texting and lecture notes somethings on the list I don’t agree with. First off I think that academic papers and research papers are the same thing, research papers fall under the category of an academic paper in my opinion. Also personally in the past I didn’t take reading notes so to me that does not apply. That being said my top ten list would be as followed texting, e-mail, status update, status comments, instant messaging, academic papers, lists, lecture notes. Instead of research papers and reading notes I would change that to poetry and journaling. The reason for these difference is purely personal. I enjoy writing poetry to me it a creative outlet a way to express feelings that are hard to convey through speaking. Journaling is also something I started to do a lot it is a way for me to reflect on my day and process all the events both good and bad. I don’t think anyone’s top ten list would be exactly the same because it is all about which you feel most comfortable or enjoy doing the most. #5: The WIDE researchers found that students valued texting the most, but the next three genres they valued most were academic. When the WIDE researchers asked students what kind of writing they valued, how do you think students were defining "value"? Do you think they value texting and research papers in the same way? Consider the list of genres you write (that you made for question 3). How are these different genres valuable to you? What is it about them that makes them valuable? Is it easy for you to compare and rank the kinds of value that each of those genres has for you, or is it like comparing apples and oranges?
The WIDE researchers found that after texting academic papers, lecture notes and research papers were the next three most valued writing types(6). I noticed a pattern that the ones they most valued also appeared to be in their most frequently used according to the figure 2 (7). I think based on the chart that they value the things that are most prevalent in their lives. So texting is number one because they spend a lot of their times texting. Then being students in college taking notes and writing papers are a huge part of their tasks they must complete. I also think that value to them could mean what is most important to success. The tops being academic could show they want to do well in to achieve by getting good grades. I don’t think they value texting and research. I think they value texting as a way to stay connected. While with research papers they value as a key to success to get the grade. The paper is more of a responsibility so it is valued in the same way as completing task on time is. They genres from my list are valuable to me because they are what I spend a lot of my day doing and what bring me joy. For example poetry is on my list because to me it makes happy to write and it is an escape. Texting and social media are valuable to me because I spend all my time checking them and staying connected. Being so far from home. I couldn’t rank the value they have because they each hold value in their own way. If I had to though I would rank the ones that give me joy like poetry and texting over papers because while they are equal in value. I would rather spend time doing what I enjoy.
