What a great summers day yesterday, - 27 Degrees! Last Friday we enrolled three Syrian refugee students into Carisbrook School. Ahmad is a year eight student and Reema and Faeza are year four students. They are delighted to have the opportunity to be in a school again and are looking forward to the learning opportunities and the opportunities to develop new friendships. This week we have also been happy to see more ex-carisbrook students return to us after having moved out of town. This week I have observed our Year Seven and Year Eight food technology students making butter and yoghurt for themselves from milk. The students got to each make their own butter in jars for themselves and enjoyed tasting and eating their finished products on cracker biscuits. Many of the students were very surprised with both, how butter was made and also with how good the butter tasted. The next day the students made yoghurt. I hope that the students involved in this process will share these activities with those at home. Speaking of food, our Year Eight students who are in the University of Otago ASPIRE programme were treated to a variety of food related activities at the University last Friday after school. The students spent time experimenting with food and then got to eat some of their products. The ASPIRE programme opens participants eyes to the opportunities that are available to them if they choose to take the university pathway. We currently have six Year Eight students on the programme and we are negotiating to have this programme continue and available to another group of Year Eight students later this year. Some of you will remember the ‘Rangitahi Leadership and Fitness’ programme that twelve of the Carisbrook Year Eight students got to participate in last year. This programme is organised by the Dunedin Police with great support from the both the Highlanders and the Southern Steel. The programme involves students dragging themselves out of bed on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and getting themselves to Carisbrook school by 7.00am ready to start the fitness programme. They are joined in their efforts by professional sportsman from both netball and rugby. The sportsman also eat breakfast with the students following the workouts and talk to the students about their hardwork and journeys. This programme will kick off in a couple of weeks. Senior students have started returning their applications.
Responsible
The ‘Friends of Carisbrook School’ have met over the recent break and have prepared a number of activities for our Carisbrook students for the rest of this year. They put in a lot of work behind the scenes with organizing fundraisers and activities for our students to benefit from. Please support the Friends of Carisbrook school in their ventures as it is your children that benefit in the long run.
Respectful
Track suit pants, jackets and beanies are in great demand as parents prepare their students for the upcoming cold blast that we get with winter. Remember that we carry limited uniform stock so get your orders in early. It will be interesting to see how many snow days we receive this year. Numbers are growing again in the ‘After School Programme’ at Carisbrook School. After School Programme Supervisor Anna runs a great programme for our students that attend. The programme, like our Holiday Programme is Oscar approved. We are going to start taking enrolments for the next Holiday Programme in week three.
