9:14 Paul offers no ‘logical’ explanation for the compatibility of God’s sovereignty with the equally biblical teaching that God is meticulously fair and that human beings are justifiably blameworthy for their actions. We would do well to follow Paul’s approach: affirm the truth of these amazing doctrines without weakening them (Jeremiah 9:23–24). 9:14 God has always been and always will be righteous and just (Malachi 3:6). 9:14 God is holy, therefore He punishes sin. God is love, therefore He saves sinners. 9:15 God’s sparing and protecting the Israelites was purely of His mercy and grace…none deserved His mercy! He had the right to act as He saw fit. 9:15 God’s sovereignty and grace are not only harmonious but are inseparable. 9:16 All human effort only leaves us condemned; if we are saved it is only because God chooses to show mercy on us. 9:16 God’s sovereignty does not set aside human responsibility (Hebrews 11:20–21). 9:17 The God of history puts a king into a position in order to demonstrate a far greater purpose...to bring glory to His name throughout the whole earth. Remember: God’s decisions on these matters are not revealed to us and are not meant in any way to cause despair. The Bible makes it plain; God will never refuse to accept anyone who comes to Him. 9:18 To fault God for showing mercy to some while hardening others is to require that He conform to our flawed concept of justice.
It is absolutely crucial to understand theology based on the biblical revelation of the character of God, not on the basis of personal perceptions of what ‘ought to be’ from our perspective. 9:18 That God hardens hearts is only ever followed by those who first harden themselves (Exodus 7:13–14, 22; 8:15, 19, 32; 9:7, 34– 35). 9:18 Because of willing unbelief, God is just in condemning those who already deserve it (John 3:18, 8:24). We also must not think the hardening is necessarily permanent. That God does not bring about the immediate death of the sinner but endures his sin means that He is giving that sinner the opportunity to repent.
“God’s [sovereign] freedom means inequality. Inequality, however, always arouses in us the feeling of injustice. We want to measure God by our yardstick. But God’s righteousness cannot be measured by our standards. It includes His absolute sovereign freedom; else He would not be the God who freely bestows...” ~E. Brunner, 1949 “...[predestination] is truly a labyrinth from which the mind of man is wholly incapable of extricating itself. But the curiosity of man is so insistent that the more dangerous it is to inquire into a subject, the more boldly he rushes to do so.” ~John Calvin, 1560 “Righteousness belongs to the very nature of God; ...the fact that God is righteous is self-evident and is settled as being self-evident. To prove it is like trying to prove that whiteness is white, that the sun is light, that God does not sin.” ~R.H. Lenski
