Truth Momentum—Part 29 September 19/20, 2015 Acts 17:16-34 FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1) Knowing God is the key to contentment (Philippians 4:11), happiness (Psalm 33:12; 144:15), and peace (Isaiah 26:3; Romans 8:6). In times of crisis, it is “the people who know their God” who “will display strength and take action” (Daniel 11:32). 2) 17:16 Paul was not in Athens as a tourist. He saw Athens as a city full of lost people, doomed to eternity without Jesus. 3) 17:17 Paul was waiting for Silas and Timothy before starting their mission, but he could not keep from proclaiming the Good News about Jesus when he entered the synagogue. 4) 17:18 Epicureans—atheists; materialists; sought to enjoy life by keeping things in balance Stoics—rejected pagan worship; believed everything was “god;” sought to follow reason, to be self-sufficient and unaffected by inner feelings 5) 17:19 Paul was not on trial; the Athenians simply wanted him to explain what he had been telling people.
12) 17:30 All that ignorance was overlooked (Romans 3:25) because God has always been more interested in repentance than in judgment. This does not mean men were not guilty (Romans 1:19–20), but only that God held back His wrath temporarily. 13) 17:31 There are no excuses because the proof is in. All will be judged by what they do with this truth! To reject Jesus is to reject the intervention of God on behalf of man. To reject Jesus is to open oneself up to future judgment. 14) 17:32-33 Three typical responses to the Gospel: Some will simply ridicule the message. Some will not be convinced, but are still willing to hear more. Some will respond in faith.
“Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going?” Science attempts to answer the first question. Philosophy wrestles with the second. Only Jesus has the answer to all three. GREEK WORDS Paroxunō (par-ox-oo'-no)—to become angry, or infuriated, to exasperate :- provoke, stir.
6) 17:21 They did not have a genuine interest in the gospel; they were simply consumed with the latest news, the latest gossip, the latest gadget. 7) 17:24 The idea of a single supreme being and creator of all that exists was totally foreign and was indeed an “unknown God.” 8) 17:25 If God is God, He is self-sufficient and needs nothing we can supply. 9) 17:26 All men are equal, because all are created by God. 10) 17:27 God’s purpose and desire is that people might seek him and find him. 11) 17:29 God made man in His image, therefore it is foolish for man to make gods in our image.
