Fremont Stamp Club News President’s Column
Dear Members:
As most of you know, Ken Goss has stepped down as our president since he and Theresa are moving out of the area. While I know it comes as a great loss to the Fremont Stamp Club, I am happy for the two of them as it brings them closer to family. Ken, I want you to know that our door is always open. So, don’t be a stranger. I’m sure that we will continue to see you at Bay Area shows. Being the vice president, I have inherited the president position. Ken has left some big shoes to fill. I hope I can meet the expectations for the job! A few weeks ago, the Board met to plan out the programs for the rest of the year. This month is a Show & Tell. Now would be a good time to go through that box of “stuff” you have on that top shelf and find something show off. You know the box I am talking about? It’s that one that you have been putting stamp purchases in for quite a while, but never seem to have time to look through. Maybe you have a recent purchase or a purchase from years ago. We’d love to see it!

The Board worked hard to fill the 2015 calendar, still there are a couple of dates open on our program calendar. I will be trying to get some interested parties to make presentations. If you have an idea for a program or would like to make a presentation please let me know. Before he bolted out of town, Ken gave me a few boxes of philatelic items. I’ve got too many to bring to one meeting, so I’m going to spread them out over a few meetings. There are some basic stamps, binders, supplies, and collections. There might even be an elephant or two. So, I’ll bring a couple of boxes to this month’s meeting and everyone can look through the material. I figure that if there is anything left over we can give it to a kids table at one of our local shows. Also, it goes without saying that there will be some COALPEX updates at the February meeting. Yes, we do need you to volunteer! A reminder….don’t forget to mail in you 2015 dues. Please fill out the membership form. I plan on updating the club directory and handing out copies at our April meeting. That doesn’t leave you much time to be a 2015 member of the Fremont Stamp Club. Dave

Admiral Frank Friday Fletcher, Commander at Vera Cruz by Alan Baker In 1914 there was high tension between the US and Mexico. President Wilson refused to recognize the dictatorial government of General Huerta. At this time Admiral Frank Friday Fletcher was the commander of US naval forces in the Gulf of Mexico. On April 9th Mexican authorities at Tampico arrested a boat crew from the USS Dolphin and refused Admiral Henry T. Mayo’s demand for a twenty-one gun salute to the American flag accompanying an apology. Eleven days later, after consulting with Congress, President Wilson ordered Admiral Fletcher to seize the customs house at Vera Cruz. A force of about 787 marines and blue jackets from the battleships Florida and Utah occupied the city. On April 30th Fletcher turned over command of the city to General Frederick Funston. For his part in the Vera Cruz operations Admiral Fletcher was awarded the Medal of Honor. The Fletcher-class of destroyers is named after him.
Editors Note…
As Dave noted in the President’s Message, Theresa and are relocating. We are selling our house in Fremont and are moving to El Dorado Hills just North of Sacramento. We will be approximately two hours from the Bay Area and expect to be down frequently for Bay Area shows and visits with friends. Look for an invitation to visit us once we are settled! I will continue to edit our bulletin. If you have an article, please send to:
