Dear Stamp Friends: I hope our members had a chance to visit Filatelic Fiesta this weekend. This is a World Series of Philately show and one has the pleasure of viewing some of the best exhibits to be seen in the US. Our member Henry Marquez showed his fabulous mulit-frame “Peru 1896-1930” which shows the postal and philatelic history from the last postal reform of the 19th century to the early years of Airmail service. I do not know the award at this time, will be able to advise at the meeting. Several months ago, Henry gave a presentation on his “The First Coil Stamp of the World—Peru One Dinero Red of 1862” to the club. This exhibit won the single frame Champion of Champions in 2012. At the Filatelic Fiesta bourse, I was very actively searching for some 1917 Franklins to complete the set Scott 498-518. I am just down to a few and once again I am amazed at how difficult it can be to find relatively common stamps in the condition that I like.

The US was printing stamps in the millions, but the quality of the printing and centering are always all over the map. There is no shortage of these stamps to look at and choose from, but the nicest ones that are commanding real premiums are few and far between. And it is always interesting to see what is interpreted as XF! Another Club Election Night, where we confirm our volunteers for the coming two years. Please come and show your support and keep the club alive! Since our program for November 14th is our club election, we will have time for Show and Tell. Please bring something to share with the membership. If you found something at Fiesta, please bring it along! Thank you to those who continue to support the club. See you at the meeting! Ken

US Scott Numbers 10 and 11: I’m Confused! By Tom Hayes I have been collecting US stamps since childhood, and I think I have a decent grasp of many issues and their varieties. This particular design has always had me stumped, however. I am finally diving in and trying to understand the differences between the two listings and Scott’s poor attempt to define them. The fact that 95% of all the stamps printed are #11 (or 11a) tells me that there is no shortage of misidentified stamps on the market posing as #10 or 10a. “The 3c Stamp of the United States 1851-1857 Issue” by Carroll Chase is the definitive work on the design of this issue, but is long out of print. I managed to find a used copy on a website that was almost reasonably priced, but it has not yet arrived. In the meantime, I also found a good write-up by a dealer: http://rosenstamps.com/the-3-cent-stamp-of-1851/ Below is a picture of a page from my album with the few examples of the issue that I have acquired.
This will be a real adventure as I dive into a specialized field that has puzzled me all these years. One thing I know for certain: the Scott catalog is not going to help me. Their color descriptions don’t even make sense to me.
