Fremont Stamp Club News Pre s i de nt ’ s Column Dear Stamp Friends: The FSC got off to a smashing start to 2013 – we had 13 members in attendance and it made for a really lively meeting. Thank you to all who come out and support the club. A special shout out to Henry Marquez for making this meeting. To those of you who had not met Henry, he is our past bulletin editor and is an expert on the philately of Peru. (But he is branching out and showed some interesting postal strike mail from Canada that was mailed via the US). And for those who did not hear it at the meeting, Henry won the 2012 Single Frame APS Champion of Champions award for his exhibit “The First Coil Stamp of the World – The One Dinero Rose of 1862 from Peru.” Henry’s exhibit can be viewed in its entirety at the new FSC website, www.fremontstampclub.org . Thanks to Alan Baker for all his work on the new website.

As noted in the schedule section, we have the Three Dealer Stamp show coming up on the 23rd and 24th this month. I strongly encourage our members to support this show. As stamps shows are becoming less and less frequent, this show fills a great need. There is something for everyone at this show. Richard specializes in Asia, Gary does US and Tom sells the World. And keep in mind that Gary and Tom come down from Oregon so show your appreciation by paying them a visit and buying a few stamps. I’ll be there! I am chasing down a nice US C1! Please note that there is no February meeting due to Valentines Day falling on the 2nd Thursday this year. The members were polled at the January meeting and those present agreed that it would be best to cancel. We will resume our regular meetings for the rest of the year in March. See you at a meeting! Ken

The USS Macon by Tom Hayes February 12, 1935
Did you know… The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) succeeded in locating and surveying the debris field of Macon in February 1991, and was able to recover some artifacts. The exploration included sonar, video, and still camera data, as well as some artifact recovery. In May 2005, MBARI returned to the site as part of a year-long research project to identify archeological resources in the bay. Side-scan sonar was used to survey the site. The wreckage of Macon was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on January 29, 2010. The wreck site remains secret and is within a marine sanctuary, the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. It is not accessible to divers due to depth (1,500 ft, 460 m)
