OSD Gifted Newsletter Common Core State Standards and Gifted The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are the foundation for what is taught in every classroom in Oxnard School District. The California Association for the Gifted has released a document “Differentiating the Common Core State Standards for Gifted Students” (see www.cagifted.org), an outline resource which uses the CCSS as a springboard for teachers to weave in more novelty, acceleration, depth and complexity for students in need of more challenge. The need for understanding how to differentiate for advanced learners is more important today than ever. Strategies that increase rigor and engagement benefit ALL students, not just the gifted. The Oxnard School District Gifted Education Services is available to support teachers and parents as we work together to keep our students challenged and reaching.

Oxnard Teachers Go To Gifted Summer Institute Twenty-five teachers from the Oxnard School District attended an intense three day Gifted Summer Institute in Santa Barbara in July. Teachers attended breakout sessions presented by some of the state’s highly qualified experts in Gifted Education. Sessions included topics such as: Redefining differentiation in relationship to Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards, Illustrating instructional strategies related to thinking skills of problem solving, critical and creative thinking, Modeling the concept of a "challenge " and Developing a differentiated unit of study. Attending teachers were able to watch as other teachers masterfully modeled teaching strategies that effectively meet the needs of gifted students. This three day institute is a crucial element of the Oxnard School District gifted cluster teacher training plan.

What teachers are saying after attending the Summer Institute

What’s Happening at the School Sites? What is a Gifted Cluster Classroom? Before the school year begins, the specific needs of all students are evaluated to ensure appropriate classroom placement. School sites ensure that all identified gifted students, in a single grade level, are placed in the same classroom, (a cluster classroom). This is enables the cluster teacher to use the strategies and techniques suited for gifted students to better meet their needs. Cluster teachers can more easily differentiate instruction, use the Depth and Complexity icons and Universal Themes to enrich the curriculum when the gifted students are clustered in one classroom.

I will use the Depth and Complexity icons with my class.

Gifted students make connections naturally and we need to capitalize on that !

I learned that gifted students learn differently and need to be challenged in different ways.
