News from Cougar Country September 2016 Issue STUDENT SERVICES The school year is off to a great start! Counselors have been enjoying meeting with our 9 th grade students and seeing their “About Me” videos that were made in Health and Fitness class, reconnecting with students and hearing about summer adventures and also helping our seniors navigate the post-secondary planning and college application process during our “senior sessions”. We wanted to make sure that you are aware of the following upcoming dates: October 19th – 10th Grade Career Fair (All 10th grade students) October 19th – PSAT (All 11th grade students are able to take the PSAT for free this year) October 19th – VSAC Forms Night (Come work with a representative from VSAC who will be here to answer any specific questions you may have about the financial aid process and the forms that need to be filled out as part of the process) November 2nd – College Night (Designed for 9th–11th grade students and families) November 16th – ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) given at MMU (Register in Student Services) As always, please reach out to us with any concerns or questions that you have! HOMECOMING Homecoming is scheduled for October 14th and 15th! We open up the festivities to the community on Friday, the 14 th with a parade at 4:30pm (with a Dr Seuss theme); followed by a family bbq, live music, and inflatables from SuperSounds and the National Guard. Friday evening events ends at 7:15pm. Saturday, Cougar Nation will be “Fighting Cancer” as all teams will be supporting the cause throughout the day! PARENTING TEENAGERS - SESSION #1 - OCTOBER 26 TH, 6:30-8:00 PM During the 2016-17 school year MMUHS is going to be holding evening events on issues that can arise when raising teenagers. We are hoping to hold four or five of these events over the course of the school year. The purpose of the evenings will be to inform parents/guardians about the selected topics and discuss various parenting strategies. The first session is on October 26th and will focus on the impact of substances abuse on the teenage brain. If you have any questions please contact Principal Mike Weston. These evening events are sponsored by a WSCC grant.
SAP COUNSELOR My name is Sara Mabley and I am the Student Assistance Program Counselor at MMU. I provide confidential, prevention and intervention services for students who are struggling with, impacted by or at risk of developing issues with substance use. I offer short-term counseling to help students manage personal stressors, build positive relationships and develop self care and coping strategies. I also promote education, motivation and self awareness and connect students and families with school and community resources. PLEASE JOIN US FOR THE 3rd ANNUAL MMU TRAVEL CLUB FUN RUN A truly fun run/walk along a beautiful 4-mile Jericho/West Bolton loop on Sunday, October 23, 2016 at 11:00 am. Parking will be at Wheeler Field (corner of Nashville Rd and Stage Rd in West Bolton). Directions from Browns Trace in Jericho: take Nashville Rd approx. 3.75 miles. This pre-Halloween event is for the whole family! Costumes are highly encouraged. Strollers and leashed dogs are welcome. We have lots of great prizes awarded by bib raffle. All proceeds help fund our service trip to Costa Rica. Preregistration is $15.00, please visit the MMU Travel Club website (mmutravelclub.org) and click on the Fun Run Tab.
