LOBURN SCHOOL WILLIAM PIKE CHALLENGE AWARD September 2016
Lake Daniels on a cold, frosty morning. Our 2016 edition of the WPCA is fast coming to a close. Once again, our students have had a fantastic year and they have really taken the opportunities afforded to them to develop their own skill and confidence base. I look back to the beginning of the year where I know a few of them (and their parents) were apprehensive of what lay ahead. If you were to speak to them now, they would say it has been the best thing they have ever done. We have had students taking up team sports for the first time, learning amazing skills and giving to the community way more than the 20hrs expected. Our relationship with Rangiora Rotary continues to flourish with students helping with the Rotary Book Sale in addition to the Saturday BBQ’s. Other places / activities where the students have completed community service hours include - local library, preschools, working bees, Pony Club, refereeing, Summer Sounds Concert and St John.
New hobbies taken up by the students include - hockey, karate, cooking, Army Cadets, St John, trampolining, rifle shooting and various sports. Our last challenge is kayaking on the Styx River on November 9 and we have booked William in for our prizegiving on December 1st. All community members and sponsors are invited. Just like previous years, it will be a fantastic occasion. Remember, you can follow the details of Above and below: The students making each of the WPCA by going to: https:// their way up the 20m climbing frame at the Groynes. goo.gl/u6FXB7 or follow the student blogs at https://goo.gl/FS8ZLk Thanks very much again to all our sponsors for their support of the WPCA. All the students have been writing blogs about the WPCA. Community Service I am glad to announce I have completed my twenty hours of community service. And more. First I must say that starting it early on was amazing advice given to me by the previous Yr 8's. It's a great feeling to have nearly everything you need to do done by Term three. I get Term four off! If anyone was to ask me advice about Community service starting early would most definitely be my answer. I got most of it done at the library in Rangiora, by shelving books and blacking out the tags on books they were giving away. It was great to give back to them especially since I get books out frequently. I also used the chance given to me by the school to do Rotary Club. Time flew by really quickly when I was in charge of the stove. Although my face almost got burnt a few times! I plan on adding a few more hours to achieve my goal of 46 hours at the end of the year. I think I might cook for the local church, where they'll give it away to those who can't cook for themselves. I hope others found this as rewarding as I did. I feel grateful that I was given the opportunity to give back. Derrin Smith High Ropes Excitement was the one emotion I was feeling, all the emotion in the air was either excitement or nervousness / anxiety. If I was a rag doll I would be parting at the seams with excitement, this was my thing, the adrenaline was awesome, just the feeling of climbing and completing the wall. The first activity that my group did was the giant's ladder. We then split into a further 3 groups from our original group of nine; in my group was Holly P and Brooklyn and we were the first small group to climb up the ladder. Holly and I helped Brooklyn climb up the first 4 one meter high rungs on the ladder, Brooklyn then stopped as her fear of heights got to her but at least she climbed up about 4 meters. I got to the top first and looking down at everyone was a bit frightening but I calmed myself down as my legs were shaking helped Holly up on the second to last one, I got up first because I had been using a corner. When all of the group had finished, we switched over with the other one and got ready to face the Vertical playground… My team was up first again to tackle the vertical Playground, we attached ourselves to the ropes and started climbing. Holly was taking the lead as I was struggling to
transition from the twisty climb to the rock climb wall. After Mr Priddy held the twisting pole still while I moved on, I found that these foot holds were easier to climb than others that I have done previously. Overall I have definitely taken on board a lot of stuff from this experience as it was very thrill seeking to myself, I and very proud of myself with what I had achieved. I Would definitely do it again if I had the chance to!\ Emma Yardley New Hobby On Saturday 2nd April, I went to my first official hockey game at Nunweek Park in Christchurch. The weather was cloudy and still. Just perfect in my opinion. The field was much bigger then what we practice on. We wait half an hour before we get on the field. In the half an hour, we went for a jog around the field and did some stretches on the way. We also partnered up and had a few passes between our peers. Once Marty (our coach) told us it was time, we all headed in between the concrete path that separated the two fields apart and walked through a little squeaky gate that welcomed us to the field. We hung up our hockey bags on the hooks, yanked our hockey sticks out and through our mouth guards in our mouth. We listen carefully as we are told what position we will be playing and who we're playing. I find out that we are playing Fernside and that I'm playing center left. We all head to our position and wait impatiently as the other team casually walk up to their positions. Our team player Harriet has the ball and patiently waits for the referee to blow the whistle. The whistle blows and we are off. The ball gets thrown all around the field and we all sprint to it. Before you know it, it's half time and we're all eating oranges and drinking like crazy from our drink bottles. Marty gives us some advice to get back and help goalie Katelyn out and to run faster. We all get back on the field as if we are ready to take on the world (or maybe that's just the way I feel) and sprint to the ball once the whistle blows. We use team work by calling each others names and finding ways pass the team enemy. The player of the day goes to Katelyn (goalie) and gets a bag of lollies as a prize. We all applause and say goodbye as we head home. I find out that we lost 7-1. I wasn't actually too sad because it was our first game and most of the people were beginners. So I ended up going home happier then I actually thought. And that is how my first game went Haylley Carter
