The Grand Marais Public Library is pleased to announce a Request for Qualifications to create one or more public artwork(s) for the Grand Marais Public Library. The artwork will celebrate one or more community specific, artistic, cultural or historical attribute(s) and will be placed in a high profile location for all to enjoy. The intention of this public artwork is to create art that honors the community and reinforces the perception of the library as a place to experience arts, culture and history through a variety of mediums.

ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to artists, working in any media, 18 years of age or older who currently live in one of the 7 counties located with the Arrowhead Regional Library System (see front panel). PROJECT BUDGET: Total: $10,000 inclusive of all artist fees, travel, research, design, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation/construction and documentation. DESK DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: August 22, 2014 by 4:30 p.m. SITE SPECIFIC CONSIDERATIONS: The proposed artwork should celebrate one or more of Cook County's key artistic, cultural and/or historical attribute(s) and enhance the library building’s function as a source for art, culture and history within the community.
HOW TO APPLY: Artists interested in the project should submit ONE copy of each of the following:

LETTER OF INTEREST, no more than one and one-half pages in length, which explains your interest in the project, relevant experience, and philosophy on public art.
An Artist Selection Committee comprised of staff and board members from the Grand Marais Public Library will review all artists’ submissions and select finalists.

A CURRENT RESUME, no more than three pages, including references.
Finalists will interview with the Selection Committee at the library.

A CONCEPT PROPOSAL, if you have an idea in mind. This is not required for your submission to be considered complete. It may, however, further inform the Artist Selection Committee's decision.
If the initial meeting is successful, the project will be officially awarded to the artist.

The artist will be asked to develop a conceptual approach for artwork to be displayed at the site (if not already included with the artist's original submission).

The artist will make a presentation to the Selection Committee of their proposed work for the site including a visual representation, materials to be used, size, weight, installation requirements, details of maintenance guidelines, and budget.

Upon approval of the proposed design, the artist will begin work.

Special consideration should be given to the cultural composition/values of the community, as well as significant historical events. The intention of this public artwork is to create art that honors the community and reinforces the perception of the library as a place to experience arts, culture and history through a variety of mediums. Please note: Any proposed artwork, to be located outdoors, should be cost effective and durable due to the exposure to outside elements. LOCATION: Grand Marais Public Library is located across from the scenic Grand Marais Bay at 104-2nd Avenue West, Grand Marais, MN 55604. The recently remodeled and expanded Grand Marais Pubic Library is a welcoming institution for children, teens, families and adults of all ages and abilities.
SELECTION PROCESS:
12 DIGITAL IMAGES (or slides) representative of your work. Digital images may be emailed or sent on a CD that is PC compatible. Photos should be 600x800 jpg, gif or tif. Each image file designation should include your name and a reference number. Slides must be in a clear plastic sheet. Each slide must be numbered, the top of the image indicated, and your name included on the slide.

AN ANNOTATED IMAGE LIST or VIDEO DESCRIPTION with your name and a brief description of each image including its title, date, medium, size, location, and cost.

SELF-ADDRESSED STAMPED ENVELOPE appropriately sized and sufficiently stamped for the return of application materials (if desired).
The desk deadline for submitting materials is Friday, August 22, 2014 by 4:30 p.m.
