Inspiration from the past, learning, contributing, empowering for today and tomorrow ISSUE 7, 4 MAY 2018

Message from Our Principal Tēnā Koutou Katoa Welcome to Term 2. A special welcome to the following new staff: Mr Paul Sandkuijl, Teacher in Charge of Digital Technologies and Mrs Laleshni Kumar, English relief for the start of the term. We wish them all the best for a great start. Over the holidays, staff and prefects represented our school at the ANZAC services held in Napier and Taradale. This is an opportunity to respectfully remember the men and women who served our country over 100 years ago. It is also a time to think of those who strive to cease current conflicts across the globe. ‘It isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn’t enough to believe in it. One must work at it’. Eleanor Roosevelt. The world’s need for peacemakers seems to not be diminishing. Examples of hostility and bloodshed, and the associated effects are never far from view. Seeking to understand difference, not condemn it, is the art of peace-making. Here at Napier Girls’ High School we encourage our girls to seek out empathy and understanding. As ever, such a practice should be undertaken every day. We dedicated an assembly this week to ANZAC, led by our Year 13 students. The following was read out by prefects Kyra Raihania and Ella Simcox.

Ka mahi te tawa uho kite riri Well done, you whose courage is like the heart of the tawa tree

We welcome back this term our sailing team, hockey team and orienteering team and our students who went to Japan, who all achieved much success. You can read about this further in this newsletter. As we head into Term Two, we are embracing the wonderful learning opportunities ahead. I look foward to seeing you at upcoming events. To those students and staff involved in the musical “Beauty and the Beast”, we wish you all the very best. The great work that our staff do was celebrated this week as we were presented with our Investors in People Award. Also, the wonderful results our students have achieved are summarised in the confirmed 2017 NZQA data over the page. Ngā mihi nui

SPORTS NEWS Sailing

The Napier Girls’ High Sailing team came from a victorious sweep of the awards at the North Island Sailing Champs, to compete over the holidays at the NZSS Team Sailing Nationals. The girls were in good spirits on and off the water. They showed high-level skill and resilience over the six days of this competition. As the only girls’ team in Gold fleet (made up of the top 11 teams of the 32 teams) they put a lot of pressure on the opposition - mostly boys’ teams. After two round-robins they were placed 5th overall. They also were ahead of NBHS and had beaten them twice. A rather breezy last day and injuries forced the girls to dig deep and they placed 7th overall, winning the “Best Girls’ Team” Trophy for the 5th consecutive year in this national competition. This is our best ever result and the best result of any girls’ team at this event. Off the water, the girls were a credit to the school and gained the respect of their competition and officials. Several people approached staff to compliment the girls on their achievement and general behaviour. This was a superb team effort and the girls also had a lot of fun together. They certainly enjoyed their success.

We wish them the best!

The NGHS Sailing team has now won the right to compete at the Interdominion (29 September to 4 October) in Algies Bay to represent NZ against Australian school teams.

Thank you to Orestes Reyes the fabulous coach and the staff - Nigel Mannering and Philipp Otto for their dedication to the team.

Hockey

St. Cuthbert’s College ANZAC Hockey Festival The NGHS 1st XI Hockey team travelled to Auckland in the holidays to attend the annual ANZAC Hockey Festival hosted by St. Cuthbert’s College. This was an invitation-only event for teams who were ranked in the top 10 across the country.

They played five games in three days, including the #1 ranked side in the country, St. Cuths. Great hockey was played, games were very close and our results were excellent: NGHS v St Cuths 0-1 NGHS v Waikato Dio 1-3 NGHS v St Andrews College 2-0 NGHS v Villa Maria College 1-2 NGHS v Queen Margaret College 3-1.

Two NGHS players (Summer Gray and Rileigh Knapp) were selected for a Festival team to play a traditional game against an ANZAC Old Girls’ team. The old girls’ won! A Festival Dinner was held on the Tuesday night which all teams attended and allowed all the girls to mix away from the hockey turf. St. Cuthbert’s hosted a fantastic three days of hockey and for the 1st XI it was a great way to start the 2018 season off against such strong teams.

Orienteering

Well done to our team of Orienteers who competed at the North Island Orienteering Champs in Paraparaumu over the holidays. Carolyne Nel did very well to place th in the Long Champs. Thank you to Tim Thatcher who took our team alongside NBHS.

Rugby Sevens

Hawke’s Bay Under 18’s Sevens Tournament was held last term at Tareha Reserve, Taradale, where Hawke’s Bay came 2nd, beating Gisborne but losing to a very strong physical Wellington side. NGHS was represented by Yr 11’s Anna Powdrell, Raine Chittick and Amber McKenzie. Well done girls.

Emerging Talent

Brianna Lee and Ms Sheila Smidt attended an Emerging Talent Camp last Wednesday to Friday 25th-27th April in Rotorua. The course covered: Athletes Training/ Periodisation; Nutrition; Recovery; Sleep; Use of water in Recovery, among other topics. The coaches and athletes all benefited from training and discussing their approach to training. The course proved to be very beneficial to all concerned and has provided a lot of food for thought. The interaction was invaluable.

Solène is from France and Seiya and Nat are from Thailand. We wish them a happy and successful stay at Napier Girls’ High School. Our new students are pictured. Deputy Principal Suzanne Downs attended international student marketing events in Vienna, Austria and Frankfurt and Hamburg, Germany during the holidays to promote our school to prospective international students. We congratulate Dani Bartelheimer and the Napier Girls’ High Sailing team for their performance in the NZSS Team Sailing Nationals. Under the expert guidance and care of Mr Philipp Otto, Mr Nigel Mannering and Coach, Mr Orestes Reyes, the team achieved their best ever result and the best result of any girls' team ever at this event.
