JOB DESCRIPTION ALTERNATIVE LIVELIHOODS PROJECT MANAGER Mozambique The Marine Megafauna Association (AMM) is working closely with local communitites to inspire guardianship of Mozambique’s unique ocean, coastline and marine wildlife through research, education and conservation. AMM is embarking on an exciting stage of growth and we are looking for a truly driven, passionate and experienced Alternative Livelihoods Project Manager. He/she will be involved in the establishment of alternative livelihoods and vocational training opportunities for fishermen to reduce pressure on the ocean caused by indiscriminate fishing methods. He/she will be responsible for overseeing the alternative livelihoods project cycle, liaising with fishers and developing strategies for encouraging sustainable fishing. The project may include activities such as: responsible tourism, aquaculture, ranger training, pig rearing and development of a sustainable fish consumer guide. The role includes managing an Alternative Livelihoods Officer and providing mentoring support. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with our ever-growing team of passionate and dedicated staff. Required skills/experience ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Fluency in written and spoken English and strong communication skills University degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience in business start-up, conservation, community development or a closely related field. Experience in project management and a good grasp of budgets and reporting Experience of managing staff (and/or volunteers). Experience working with local communities and/or on community development projects Able to work effectively across different cultures and as part of a team. A strong negotiator able to manage different stakeholders with different interests Passionate self-starter able to take the initiative in a constantly changing environment. Be comfortable in shared living arrangements with basic amenities

Desirable skills/experience ● ● ●

Fluency in Portuguese Experience living and working in Africa or other less developed country Experience in small business start-up or any of the activities mentioned above

Responsibilities Strategy Development •

Work with Sustainable Seas, Research staff and local leaders to develop a strategy for alternative livelihoods as part of a larger marine management plan;



Work with the AMM Research Fellow on possible aquaculture opportunities in Inhambane province



Help identify which communities and what livelihood activities could achieve AMM’s goal to end unsustainable fishing practices;

Project Management •

With support from the Conservation Programme Manager, manage and coordinate the Alternative Livelihoods project cycle;



Provide support and direction to the Alternative Livelihood Officer, to consult with fisher groups and to sensitise them to marine conservation and encourage their participation;



Support the Programme Manager and Alternative Livelihood Officer, to expand the alternative livelihood project into new communities, including developing action plans, assessing risk and liasing with stakeholders;



With support from the Education Department, oversee the roll-out of capacity-building or vocational training for fishermen;



Identify vocational training opportunities and liaise with training providers;



Work with key stakeholders (local restaurants, dive centers and government) to establish alternative livelihoods or promote sustainbly caught fish;



Ensure the implementation of Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) tools and write monthly reports on achievements and progress against targets



When required, support MMF’s grant writing applications.

Staff Management and Capacity Building: •

Manage and coordinate the work of the Alternative Livelihood Officer



Mentor and support capacity building of the Alternative Livelihood Officer



Project Finance Management:



Oversee the project budgets, keep a track of spending and advise the Programme Manager of any discrepancies;



Work with the Programme Manager to develop budget forecasts for current and future projects.

Support MMF day to day activities, such as conservation talks and events



Report to the Conservation Programme Manager
