† GRADE 8 ¢ This is your last year of middle school, so make it count! One of the most important things to remember about 8th grade is to take your education seriously. Use this year to form good study habits before high school. The effort you put in and the grades you receive this year will affect the courses you take as a freshman at BHS. Make sure you give your academics one hundred percent effort!
MR. PASTORELLI — Social Studies I want to take this time to welcome everyone to Team Katahdin and wish everyone a successful year to come. This year we embark upon hands on projects and building of skills. Students will experience and examine 3 major thematic units: Thematic Unit 1: Conflict: The American Civil War, Plains Wars, Spanish American War & World War I Thematic Unit 2: Movement of People and the Nation: Westward Expansion, U.S. Expansionism & Immigration Thematic Unit 3: Internal Rebuilding & Building: Reconstruction and Industrialization Each unit will be based on standards from the Common Core, the Maine State Learning Results, and the new Social Studies standards know as C3. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer vacation and I look forward to seeing you in the Fall.
MRS. LEARY--Math Welcome to 8th grade math! This year is going to be my 19th year here at BMS. We will be covering various topics in Algebra, Geometry and Statistics such as: * * * * * *
Linear Equations Scientific Notation Volume Square Roots Exponents Functions
I want to wish everyone a happy summer and I look forward to seeing you all in September!
MEET YOUR TEACHERS! MS. GOSSELIN -- ELA I'm thrilled to be part of Team Katahdin! I grew up in Jay, ME, which is a smaller version of Biddeford, but with a big paper mill. I went to college at UMaine and USM. I love to learn and I'll bet I learn a lot from YOU next year! I have a lot of experience teaching high school and college English classes, so by the end of 8th grade you will be ready to make the transition to BHS! In 8th grade, we will focus on reading and thinking on a deep level, writing short and long pieces for a variety of audiences, and both presenting information and performing scripts! We will also sharpen skills in grammar and vocabulary, while using technology for projects and papers. I’m excited to spend a productive, interesting and enjoyable year with you all!
Climbing Katahdin as a TEAM requires: Respect Responsibility Perseverance
MR. SANDRI - - Science Hello! I am a nerd, a redneck, and a dancer who grew up on the side of a mountain in NH. I like noisy classrooms with lots of people moving around and chatting. In my classes, we'll be focusing on a lot of different scientific questions, like why our brains lie to us, where eyes come from, what lions in India can tell us about how to survive disasters here in the US, and whether we could ever travel to Mars (or the Oort cloud). We'll be using these questions to focus on how to communicate scientific concepts through speaking, writing, and drawing. I can't wait to meet you all!
