PRINCIPALS MESSAGE Our term has started off with as much intensity as we left off in Term 1. Swimming is well underway for Rooms 2,7,3 and 4 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All classes are now timetabling in discovery time. School netball started last weekend and hockey is well underway. Congratulations to the following children who received principal awards last week at assembly: Nia DuPlessis, Patrick Stratford, Olivia Dyson, Cody Robinson, Savanah Wilkes Wulff, Rocky Lemuelu, India Rose Marsden, Molly Breen, Hayvin O'Neill, Johnny O'Neill Cooney, Mason Broome and Arn Cuthbertson. If your child is going to receive a principal’s award you will be contacted on the Thursday before the assembly. Please read the note below from the health nurse about whooping cough (Pertussis). If your child is coughing and unwell it is very important that they stay at home. If the cough lasts more than 2 weeks they need to see a doctor. Please check your emails for your latest school statement. If you have any problems with this please come and see me. PTA meeting is now on next Wednesday night 24th May 7.30pm in the staff room. As tonight there is a meeting at the high school about surviving teenage years. We need more PTA members so please consider this!! If you are one of your class reps can you please make sure that one of you attends the meetings. This saves double handling of information. There are only 2 meetings a term max. BOT meeting next Tuesday 23rd May at 6.30pm in the Breen’s office. All welcome. Fa’amanuia le Atua God Bless Julie Flannery
RESTORATIVE PRACTICE Restorative approaches in schools are being sought as alternatives to more punitive disciplinary systems and procedures where often there have been little or no links between wrongdoers and those they have harmed, nor any real connections between the punishment and the actual offence. Previous measures are also often failing to meet the relational needs of teaching and learning in 21st century schools. Increasingly schools are finding restorative approaches more effective in establishing long term lasting changes in relationships, more connecting of the members of a school community, more involving and hearing of victims, and more enhancing of climates of care within schools as a whole.

FAITH FACT FOR WEEK 3 The Church is still celebrating the Easter Season as we journey toward Pentecost. The Easter Season begins on the evening of Easter Sunday and continues for fifty days, ending on the evening of Pentecost Sunday. The fifty days between Easter Sunday and Pentecost is a time of thanksgiving and joy for what Christ has done for humanity.
Religious Education Curriculum for Term 2: In classes we are following the Sacrament Strand for the first half of the term, and the God Strand for the second half. In both Strands we are reminded to treasure times of reflection and reverence God. We are also reminded of the 7 sacraments of God’s Church: Baptism, Penance, Confirmation, First Holy Communion, Marriage, The Holy Orders, and Anointing the Sick. Let us remember to pray for each other on our faith journey, whatever our age or stage.

HEALTH
A note from the Public Health Nurse Pertussis (whooping cough) and Influenza (flu) We are still experiencing isolated cases of pertussis and we are also coming into flu season. Pertussis and influenza are infectious illnesses, and are spread when someone who is infected has a runny nose or coughs. They are always present in the community, however those who have close contact with someone who has pertussis or influenza are most at risk of catching it. Pertussis is also known as whooping cough and influenza is also known as the flu. Both illnesses can be serious for small children and the elderly. Pertussis is an infection of the throat that can cause a runny nose and an irritating cough initially, followed by spasms of coughing, and sometimes breathing difficulties and vomiting. Influenza causes a fever, body aches, a headache, a dry cough, and a sore or dry throat. People with influenza usually feel tired and less hungry than usual. General advice for anyone who feels unwell with a cough includes: -
If you are unwell, stay at home until you are better.
-
Follow basic hygiene practices: o
Wash your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds and dry them for 20 seconds
o
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze – then put the tissue in a bin
o
Cough or sneeze in to your elbow if a tissue is not readily available
o
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
o
Don’t share drinks
-
Avoid crowded places
-
See your doctor if you are still unwell in two weeks, are vomiting and cannot keep down fluids, find swallowing painful, or experience earache.
-
Ensure you are up to date with vaccinations for influenza and pertussis:
-
o
Pertussis vaccine is free for children and pregnant women
o
Pertussis vaccine is recommended every five years (but not free) for healthcare professionals, early childcare workers, and household contacts of newborns
o
Influenza vaccine is free to people over 65, and recommended but not free for anyone from 6 months onwards.
