THE SOMME – Lost Property

Phoenix at St Giles A group of our students have had the opportunity to work alongside staff from St Giles to help them design their young people's website.

We have a number of items of lost property found on coaches after our trip last weekend.

The students were absolutely amazing and came up with some fantastic ideas! St Giles have promised to keep us informed of their next steps and there is an attachment to the Newsletter giving a little more detail. A HUGE well done to all of those students! Mrs Dean

If you have lost anything please contact [email protected] and we will try and reunite you with your belongings. Finance Team

Students do you have a bank account? Get set up for your future.

Letters issued this week If any of these letters are relevant to you and you have not received them please contact the school and we will provide you with a copy.  

Alternatively you will find copies on our website: www.rawettschool.org

It is easier to open a bank account as a young person as your parent/guardian can help with proof of I.D on verifying address through their documents. As you reach 18+ you will need to produce your own identification such as a driving license, birth certificate, letter/utility bill with proof of address. Many young people do not have this form of I.D which can cause barriers to opening a bank account. You may find it is a simpler and quicker process to open one at the same bank where your parents hold an account as it can be cross-referenced for information on your address. Make life easier for yourself and get a bank account opened whilst you are still young. Check individual bank websites for details.

School Games Organiser Report January 2016 A summary of Primary School Games from September 2015 to date. 6 teams played in a round robin tag rugby tournament held at Tamworth RFC; Coton Green A & B, Manor, Dosthill, Three Peaks and Woodlands. There was a good turnout of players and supporters for the tournament on a not so warm October afternoon. With the Coton Green teams finishing 1st & 2nd they progressed through to the Staffordshire finals. After a hard fought finals day at Stafford Rugby Club, Coton Green ‘A’ were crowned Staffordshire School County Champions. There were 2 football tournaments held on the Rawlett 3G astroturf in November which were attended by 10 primary schools, Dosthill (large), St. Leonards (small) and Thomas Barnes (girls) triumphed and progressed through to represent Tamworth schools at the county finals at St. Georges Park, Burton on Trent. Although not all results went their way each team had an enjoyable day at the National Football Training Centre. Dosthill, having won the large schools competition, also go on to represent the area in Aston Villa’s regional competition at Villa Park, if they are successful there then they go on to represent AVFC in a National competition. There was a plethora of entrants in the November Cross Country competitions. 12 primary schools turned out on two particularly cold and windy afternoons. Nearly 210 boys and girls from years 3 to 6 eagerly represented their schools for a chance to reach the County Finals on what will hopefully be a warmer day in June at the School Games Summer Festival at Keele University. Going on to represent Tamworth in the finals later in 2016 are; Flax Hill, Coton Green, Manor, Greenacres, Millfield and St. Gabriel’s. The beginning of December saw a Netball Hi5 tournament unravel between 7 Tamworth primary schools and, with a place at the School Games Winter Festival at stake, matches were tightly contested. In the end it was the team from William Macgregor who were victorious in sealing their spot at the finals in February at Fenton Manor Leisure Complex. Finally to date were the small and large school Sports Hall Athletic competitions, locally won by William Macgregor and St. Gabriel’s respectively who beat off competition from 7 other schools. After a well-run Staffordshire Schools Final event at Chase Leisure Centre in January both Tamworth schools did themselves proud finishing 2nd in their respective categories. Congratulations from Rawlett to all who have taken part and to those who have gone on to represent Tamworth schools at County finals and good luck to those future finalists. Jim Tipper

Barrier To ensure the safety of students particularly at the start and end of each day the barrier is operational to restrict vehicular access. Safe student movement has to be our priority and so parents are asked not to come onto site. For the same reason there are no deliveries at these times of the day. Parents are also asked not to use the school gate as a turning point as students and buses use this area. There is an area for dropping off under the speed camera. Unfortunately this is increasingly becoming a problem and we have had a few near misses this week so your co-operation in this request is much appreciated. Mr Bassett

Careers Important information for Year 11s Students should be researching their career ideas to help them make a well informed decision about their future. The more research you do now the better prepared you will be when it comes to leaving school. Here are some pointers to help you get prepared:• Understand soft skills - Colleges, sixth form, employers and universities look for evidence of soft skills. Soft skills are time management, personal presentation, communication, teamwork, attitude, confidence. • Record your skills - You have spent the last few years participating in activities during lessons and Focus Days that would look great on a UCAS form in the future or a CV. Build a CV up on the national careers service website by opening a ‘Life Long Learning account’. Once you have one of these you can add to it for the rest of your life. • Volunteer - Not only is it good for society, it will also build some skills and experience for your CV or application form. If you are considering jobs such as police or social work then volunteering is a must! • Manage your social media profile - According to Monster, 77% of employers Google applicants. So will your social media profile prevent you from getting that dream job? Also check your email address – What does your email say about you? Be sensible! • Research your chosen career ideas on: www.nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk - Research the local college websites to find out where you can study your course and if you find the right course put in your application. If you are planning on Sixth Form check the deadline application date on the Sixth Form website as many close January or February. If you are considering an Apprenticeship it is important to keep an eye on the closing dates for the bigger companies. Get signed up to www.nationalapprenticeship.org. Complete the application form on your profile ready to send off when an apprenticeship placement becomes available. If you need any careers advice please see Miss Ambrose or email [email protected] For more information and useful links please refer to The Rawlett School website careers section Miss Ambrose

U14 Boys into the Semi Final of Rugby County Cup after hard fought victory Trentham made the lengthy journey from Stoke on Trent to face the Rawlett challenge last Wednesday afternoon. With rugby pedigree similar to ours, this was always going to be a tough challenge, and so it came to pass. Both teams were shawn of players even post confirmation of availability. A problem not exclusive to Rawlett but disappointing nevertheless. The icy rain just subsided prior to kick off thankfully, but the heavy pitch and longer than normal grass covering meant the game was a true physical test as well as test of skill and desire. Rawlett managed to open the scoring after some sustained pressure with inspirational captain Kit Smith running unchallenged from inside the 22. This score was closely followed by Chell displaying his pace when given space to attack. These 2 early scores sparked the Trentham boys into action and they had a number of excellent players who all raised their game significantly. A key battle ground was at number 8, where Rawlett’s Sutton had a battle Royal with the Trentham captain. Both boys had terrific games in defence and attack and displayed the true rugby spirit appreciating each other's effort throughout the game. The forward battle was a tight affair. There was parity in the scrum with Hartley, Smith and Tudor providing a solid front row. Combinations including Wood, Hatten and Seagrave locked the scrum in the second row. All were evident in the loose and at the breakdown as individuals but to really progress they need to hunt as a pack of forwards and seize the game, retain possession and recycle the ball continually. This will allow the fleet footed Rawlett backs the time and space to cause havoc. Being a rugby forward is totally unglamorous but glorious to those in the know. They win the game as a pack and this is all a true forward desires. Half backs Thomas and Van Der Berg controlled possession well. Thomas sniped at the breakdown with great effect and Van Der Berg fed his larger and swifter outside backs. These beasts in the centre, Smith and Kimberley were the main source of point scoring and were solid in the tackle. This left Parkes and Chell on the wings and both were excellent in the tackle and attacked the space when presented. Both teams responded to any score with one of their own. This meant for great entertainment. The ball was alive for long periods and the scrambling defence from both sides was impressive. The final score of 36 - 24 was arguably reflective of possession and territory. The game was played in a great spirit, hard and fair with all players prepared to lay their bodies on the line for the glory of victory. Rawlett 36 - 24 Trentham Tries Kimberley 3 K Smith 2 Chell Cons Van Der Berg 3 Mr Hunt
