Head: Mr H. Abbott 14 th January 2011 Dear All I would like to congratulate our Year 11 students who have sat their GCSE English Language and a small number of them have already taken their GCSE Mathematics early. They have achieved excellent results and I hope that this will motivate them to carry on working hard and to achieve their full potential in the summer term. Our GCSE examination results in 2010 were our best ever and this was due largely to the hard work of the students, supported by dedicated and committed teachers in lessons and in booster classes. I see no reason why our current Year 11 students cannot perform just as well, if not better, as many of them are showing great signs of considerable potential. This term we will be interviewing applicants for Castle Sixth Form to begin in September and I hope that they will make a good impression at interview, taking the opportunity to highlight their personal strengths and achievements in Kenilworth over the last five years. As you know, the Royal Wedding will be taking place on 29 th April and it will be a Public holiday on that day. I understand that at least one other school has moved one of their training days so that there is a three day break in that week for pupils. I have considered moving our Training Day on 13 th April but on consideration, it is better to keep it as it is (27 th and 28 th open to pupils) because we do not have the flexibility of moving two training days to this week without increasing our statutory allocation. It may create an additional problem of having just one school day in the week of the Royal Wedding if we were to add a training day to that week. In short, therefore, we will be having a training day on 13 th April, as shown on our calendar, so the last day of term for pupils will be on 12 th April. Pupils will be in school on 27 th and 28 th April and from 3 rd May onwards. I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone about the potential risks at the end of the school day and particularly around the car parks with pupils and vehicles using the same drive. I would like pupils especially to be careful when crossing roads as at times, pupils eagerly dash across roads and if drivers are not attentive at all times, there could be an accident. We want to create a safe community and so I ask everyone to be as vigilant as possible and careful in their movements to and from school.

Report from Y10 Ski trip – January 1 st – 8 th . Seventyone Year 10’s travelled to the ski resort of Pila in the Aosta Valley in NorthWest Italy for an unforgettable and character building week of skiing. The snow was excellent and we had three days of cold but sunny weather with blue skies followed by a day of snow and one of snow/sun/fog. All skiers progressed well and achieved at least a two star award with several more experience skiers gaining four stars. Pila proved to be an excellent resort for beginners, of which we had 48, and intermediate skiers. We only had three trips to the MediCentre during the week, one for dizziness brought on by the cold (minus 12 during the day!) and two for minor bumps and bruises – all have or are recovering well and only missed at most a days skiing. Everyone behaved well and we were complemented by the resorts staff, instructors, hotel staff and coach drivers (even Italian’s using our restaurant for evening meals were impressed) well done everyone.

V & A Design Museum Visit Yr 11, 12 and 13 Textile students visited London on the last Wednesday before Christmas. We visited The Ballet Russes Exhibition which showed stage and costume designs and the original costumes and scenery. There was work by Bakst, Nicolas Roevich, Lubav Tchernicheva, Picasso, Yves St Laurent and many other influential designers and artists. After the V & A we travelled across London walking past the Tower of London, over Tower Bridge and along the South Bank of the Thames to the Design Museum. It was lovely to see the buildings and lights of London with all its Christmas elements. In the afternoon the students took part in a Textiles Workshop and then looked at the Fashion Drawing Exhibition which included the work of Erté, Bakst, Gruau, Antonio and Francois Bertond, demonstrating that there are many ways of illustrating design ideas. Conversation on the train home was nearly deafening but a sign that everyone had a good time!
Clothes Show At the end of term Year 9 visited The Clothes Show at the NEC in Birmingham. We set out through the show arriving just before 10am, having a good look at the stands before most people had arrived! The fashion snow was based on the theme of American Culture and showed a varied range of fashion styles. It was good to see a new emphasis on people creating and customising their own clothing. One could try knitting, crochet and the latest sewing machines and buy lovely fabrics, threads, ribbons and buttons. Nobody got lost! And we returned to Kenilworth tired but full of ideas.

A Big Thank you from the PTA... We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year and thank all of those who supported us through our very successful Autumn Term. Through events such as the Chocolate Tombola at the Christmas Light Switch On, the Christmas Concert, the raffle and the Car Boot Sale we have raised £4000. This fundraising along with earlier events, has enabled us to provide the Expressive Arts Department with £5000 to purchase new lighting and sound equipment for shows, displays and events in Upper School Hall, as well as contributing £1000 to a new rewards scheme for the students.
School Uniform The PTA is now running a second hand uniform service. Parents will be able to purchase uniform at all car boot sales and at parent’s evenings (Car Boot Sale – 2 nd April 2011, Year 9 Parents Evening – Thursday 27 th January 2011). Over all the team played well with solid defence and good attacking from the backs. The forward of the match was Jordan Hall and the back of the match was Kyle Finn. Match report by Thomas Baines Year 8 team won 197 and Year 9 won 477. The teams this weekend play the Woodlands School and Sports College.

Youth Service Proposals The County Council are currently considering a proposal to withdraw all County Council funding for the Youth service over the course of the next three years. If implemented this would involve a 60% reduction in the funding received by county funded youth centres from April this year and the remaining 40% the following year. This potentially would have a profound effect on the youth service activities such as the various youth clubs and the Saturday cinema provided through the Kenilworth Youth and Community Centre in Abbey End. As a result the management committee of the centre are supporting a county wide petition against these proposals. If anyone wishes to support this petition which can be signed by anyone who works or lives in Warwickshire including young people an electronic version can be found at : http://democratic.warwickshire.gov.uk/cmis5/EPetitions/tabid/90/ID/20/SelectedTab/Signatures/Withdraw proposaltoceasethewholeoftheYouthServiceinWarwickshire.aspx Alternatively hard copies will be available in the reception areas of Kenilworth School for the next 12 days.
