CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES
i.
Good Samaritan Programme – Nurturing Servant Leaders Who Lead to Serve We have been offering our Learning for Life Programme since 2014, centered on student leadership and service learning. We have reviewed the programme and have renamed it as the “Good Samaritan Programme” (GSP) this year. The essence of the programme remains unchanged: we aim to help our students become socially responsible, caring and proactive servant leaders, with a sense of compassion and commitment towards serving others. This will involve students going through lessons and learning experiences such as service-learning, social advocacy work, and leadership training programmes throughout the year. In this programme, students will learn about, and apply practices from the leadership challenge model, and use it to reflect on their roles and responsibilities as leaders in service. They will also understand the significance of community involvement, reflect upon their role as responsible youths, and apply the 3R (Ready, Render, Reflect) service-learning approach to carrying out their service projects. We are confident this programme will help to develop our students to be servant leaders who can impact the community and others positively. We look forward to any suggestions you may have in improving our Good Samaritan Programme.

Teens Conference (Sat, 11 Jul) Teens Conference is an annual conference organized by our student leaders. The objective of this Conference is to help students understand their role as active citizens, and to promote sustained social advocacy among youths through critical thinking, meaningful dialogue, and dedicated planning. We wish to inspire our young leaders to create a ripple effect by taking social issues under their wing and contributing to the community through their position as student leaders. To achieve this, various social advocacy groups and community youth volunteers will be invited to share the motivation behind their initiatives and contributions. Through active dialogue with these advocates, students will understand the considerations in identifying a community need, and discuss ways in which they can promote a social cause and/or meet these identified needs. In addition, the conference serves as an opportunity for students to explore and plan a sustained approach to carrying out advocacy work, under the facilitation and guidance of the social advocates themselves. Through this experience, we hope that our student participants would develop the heart of a leader - one who seeks to empower and serve others. Interested students can approach teachers overseeing student leadership.
iii.
Catholic Activities (Fri, 31 Jul and Fri, 28 Aug) The School Chaplain, Rev Fr Frederick Quek, will be celebrating Monthly Mass in the School Chapel on 31 July and 28 August. All Catholic students should attend the mass as part of their faith formation journey.
iv.
Racial Harmony Day Commemoration (Tue, 21 Jul) We will commemorate Racial Harmony Day (RHD) on 21 July. The theme for this year’s RHD is “Harmony in our Hands”. It is a day we remember the 1964 race riots, and celebrate our success as a harmonious nation – one that is built on a rich diversity of cultures and heritage. It is also a reminder to us that racial and religious harmony cannot be taken for granted. Through lesson activities and a planned recess programme, students will learn the importance of making choices that promote inter-cultural understanding, build strong relationships between people of all races, cultures and nationalities, and strengthen our distinctive identity as Singaporeans living in multi-cultural Singapore. More details will be shared with the students nearer to the date.
v.
National Day Celebrations and National Day Fair (Thu, 6 Aug) In celebration of Singapore’s 50th year of independence, we will be collaborating with the People's Association Youth’s Movement (PAYM) to hold a fund-raising National Day Fair, and an appreciation ceremony to honour our education pioneers and seniors. The celebration theme is “Celebrating Singapore's 50th Birthday as One People”. We will affirm our shared values, history and collective aspirations in committing to a brighter Singapore. It is also a time for us to express our gratitude towards the pioneering spirit that our seniors/pioneers have demonstrated in their contribution towards the growth and development of HIHS and in nation-building.

PAYM Loves Red @ HIHS will be held on 6 August. All proceeds from the fair will go towards our School Pocket Money Fund. This will benefit our HIHS students who are in need of financial assistance. We will also invite representatives from the Lion’s Befrienders, National Kidney Foundation and Pertapis Home, as well as the less-privileged in Hougang to join us at the fair. Through this experience, we hope to promote a spirit of enterprise and creativity among students, and encourage community participation and involvement between HIHS and the neighbouring community. We welcome parents to join us in the National Day Fair. Tickets will be on sale a week before the fair. Parents who are interested to purchase the tickets may contact the General Office for further details. (3)
