I wanted to take the time to express my gratitude for all the wonderful people associated with our school. To the parents who have chosen to take a personal interest in their children's education and spend time every day to be sure they are gaining knowledge and experience, thank you. To the students who work hard on a daily basis toward their educational goals, you rock! To the teachers and support staff who believe and support our model and are invested in the student's success, you are amazing. To the office staff who do their best every day to provide amazing service to our students, we couldn't do it without you. Yay, NDA!
I am honored to work with all of you and grateful on a daily basis for the opportunity to impact children's futures and their education. For those who are new to NDA this year, I wanted you to know that I am always interested in hearing how things are going and have an open communication policy. Counselor Corner Aspire TestCongratulations to those 9th and 10th grade students who took the ACT Aspire Test for college readiness. Your NDA students performed admirably in taking this test. This test is different from other college readiness tests in that it is reflective of the Common Core Curriculum. I am looking forward to going over the results with the students when they arrive. PS-kudos to those PSAT test-takers as well! Next year's PSAT will also be reconfigured to reflect changing curriculum in our schools.
Shasta CollegeStudents should be thinking about what courses they would like to take in the Spring at this time. Go to www.ShastaCollege.edu to explore course choices. Also, if you haven't done so already, your student may have to take the assessment tests before they can sign up for certain classes, most notably those classes that transfer to a 4 year college. Call the Assessment Office for a testing time. It is important that students to develop an educational plan for post secondary education before they leave high school.
Financial Aid NightsIt is extremely important for junior and especially senior parents to attend one of the Financial Aid Nights listed on pg. 4. Whether parents think they qualify or not for financial aid, it is imperative that they and their student complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Financial Aid). There are many reasons for seniors to do so, and I would be happy to explain why. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Finally, have a Happy and safe Thanksgiving with your family and friends. Sincerely, Bob

Literacy News Reading related fiction and nonfiction together is a great way to help your child learn new concepts and make connections to the familiar. Using paired materials as Read Alouds gives you opportunities to discuss vocabulary and concepts as you read. This is a great time to share how the text structure of nonfiction and fiction are different. At the same time, you can point out similarities in the topics and

themes. Some possible questions to ask your learner include: How can I tell if a book is fiction or nonfiction? How are the facts presented differently in each book? What connections or similarities do you see in the texts? Come to the Parent Training Night on Nov.18th for more ideas and examples!

November Art Lesson CONCENTRIC CIRCLE TURKEYS Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian-French painter who contributed to color theory and the abstract art of the early 20th century. Music greatly influenced his art. He saw colors in music and heard music in colors. You may have seen his painting called “Squares with Concentric Circles.” If not, here it is!
By borrowing the idea of colorful concentric circles, you can actually create a Thanksgiving turkey with an abstract flair. Here’s what you’ll need: Colorful construction paper, scissors, glue, and a black marker First you will want the student to cut out circles of various shapes and colors. They do not need to be perfect circles, and in fact will look better if they are done by hand. Also cut out a brown turkey body, a small triangle for the beak, and a red rectangle for the wattle. Second, you will glue the circles together, starting with the largest

circle as the base, and working towards the smallest circle. We suggest laying them out first how you’d like the arrangement prior to gluing. Once those are glued on, you can add the turkey body, beak, and wattle. Lastly, use the black marker to dot eyes for the turkey. You can also use each circle edge to write down something the student is thankful for, as seen in this picture/example. Proud of your results? Post them on our Facebook page so we can enjoy them too!
