VELKOMMEN! All students will hear Norse stories and learn Mythology and the younger students will choose a Norse Viking name and create a costume with swords and shields to re-enact their favorite story or myth. They are encouraged to bring photographs or pictures from magazines of items they want to learn the Norwegian word for.

Student Housing
2012 NORWEGIAN RIDGE LANGUAGE CAMP
Host families from the community will be housing students from out-of-town. Students will be encouraged to find a town on the Norwegian map to call their host family location. Host families will be required to provide breakfast and transportation to and from the Ballard House, where the Norwegian Ridge Language Camp will be held daily.

Cherise, Niklas and Saundra Krisoffersen from Hegra Norway, Kathrine Myrah from Kongsberg Norway, Brit Eddy from Åfjord Norway, Ingrid Rotto who speaks Norwegian fluently, Rachel Storlie and Paige Kahoun who attended Concordia Language Camp as children. Assisting the instructors are: Betty Dowe, rosemaler; Jill Bjerke, crochet; Jane Bjerke, Norwegian sports activities; Dr. Richard Simon Hanson, myths and storytelling; Dean Johnson, stargazing; Dr. Jim Gray; “ Gå på tur” with trees and other flora identified by their Norwegian names; Katie Wiste, goat-cheese making and Gayle Grippen, hardangersøm. Many volunteers from Lodge 1-364 will assist the students daily with preparations for lunsj and middag. Dave Susag, Zone 5 Director, will teach the students how to make krumkaker, heart waffles and rømmegrøt. Kjersti Fried will teach lefsemaking.

If you register between now and May 20, you will be entered into a drawing to receive a prize pack including a bottle of Spring Grove soda (it’s fabulous!), a Norwegian chocolate bar and a t-shirt. Follow these easy steps to be eligible: 1. Register for the weeklong camp that is June 18-22 and include payment. 2. Send an email to
[email protected] with the name and age of the camper who registered either by snail mail, or on the Giants of the Earth Heritage Center web site. The drawing will occur on Sunday, May 20 at 2:00 PM at the Ballard House, 163 West Main. We will notify the winners the next week, and present the prizes when they arrive at camp on June 18. We are so excited about the Norwegian Ridge Language Camp, and look forward to seeing you this summer!
