Welcome to the Career & Technology Center (CTC)

Exploring Your Career Options

While in high school, you will want to: Determine your area of interest.

Discover your interests and abilities; use labor market resources at www.texasrealitycheck.com/ www.texascaresonline.com/hotshots/hotshotslists.asp.

Important Information In the fall of 2015 our community welcomed the opening of the Career & Technology Center (CTC), a state-of-the-art facility where students are connected with real-world experiences from a variety of career fields and interests. The goal of the CTC is to prepare students for college, technical school or the workforce, in a highly rigorous environment.

Most Junior and Senior—level Career & Technical Education courses will be housed at the Career and Technology Center

Freshman— and Sophomore-level courses will continue to be on the high school campuses

Transportation will be provided through a shuttle between high schools and CTC

No instructional time will be lost due to traveling to CTC or back to campus

Students will only be able to drive to the CTC if they begin or end their day at the CTC

NO student will be allowed to drive from a campus to the CTC and then back to the campus during the school day

Some courses require expenses that are the responsibility of the student 3

Pathway Selection Guide

Purpose Tyler ISD’s Pathway Selection Guide is designed to help students and parents make informed decisions about planning for the future. And, what we have included here is a great start to that process! This guide provides information about the high school graduation requirements and descriptions of the different areas of focus that students may now choose, as well as which courses are taken each of the next four years for that particular focus. We have included career and education requirements and necessary certifications & licensures options for various occupations.

Choosing an Endorsement Basic Information

5 Endorsements and 30+ Pathways An endorsement is a general focus area for students as they go through high school, which explores their interests and possible post-secondary paths for college, technical education or the work force. Within each endorsement are different pathways, which mirror different occupations. Each pathway includes a 4-year sequence of classes and satisfies the requirements of its endorsement. Students may earn multiple endorsements.

Public Services: service-oriented occupations for both private and public sector industries, including human service, public safety and healthcare fields. Requires 4 CTE credits, 2 of which must be advanced.

Business & Industry: highly varied occupations in both service and manufacturing industries ranging from industrial and technical trades to business, marketing & finance and from graphic & design occupations to information technology. Requires 4 CTE credits, 2 of which must be advanced.

Arts & Humanities: coursework that is centered around artistic and well-rounded humanities interests, with several combinations available to integrate other endorsements into occupations with these fields.

Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (S T E M): rigorous coursework and occupations centered around applied science and mathematics, including a variety of engineering fields. STEM requires the successful completion of Algebra II, Chemistry and Physics as part of the Foundation credits.

Multi-Disciplinary:

designed to allow a student to tailor his/ her interest among two different advanced coursework in two endorsements that are not already listed.

Important Information   

All endorsements require the completion of 4 math and 4 science credits. All endorsements allow for Foundation college-prep coursework as well as Advanced Placement & Dual Credit courses. Endorsements are originally decided in 8th grade and must be declared in writing.

6

Planning for High School & Beyond

Personal Graduation Plans (PGP)  

Each student will have a 4-year Personal Graduation Plan created during the fall of 8th grade with the help of his/ her guidance counselor and Exploring Careers teacher. Parent participation is VITAL! Parents should meet with their child’s counselor to discuss the plan and are required to approve the plan in writing before students register for their high school courses. Each year after, the PGP will be revised with the student, parent & counselor, according to the student’s interests and needs.

To earn an endorsement, a student must complete a coherent sequence of 4 or more credits that consists of 2 or more courses in the same career cluster including at least 1 advanced CTE course. **some exceptions apply; see specific course pathways for specific requirements.

Some CTE courses are also considered Technical Dual Credit classes. Technical Dual Credit is offered at the high school level and apply towards an Associates in Applied Science degree and/ or certificate. Most Technical Dual Credit Courses are free! Please talk to your student’s counselor for more information.

8th Grade College and Career Readiness Class Students will choose their pathways and endorsements after researching personal interests, careers, postsecondary options and long-term career goals in an College and Career Readiness class. Some students will also do the same activities through their AVID class.

7

Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Basic Information

New College Entrance Exam The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is the newest college entrance exam required of all students entering into Texas colleges or universities in areas that lead to degrees and some licensures. Students may be exempt from taking the TSI by achieving qualifying scores on STAAR End-of-Course Exams or nationally-recognized college entrance exams. Postsecondary institutions may require students to be either:

TSI—Complete: either obtain a qualifying score on TSI exam (Writing and Essay 363/4, Reading 351, Math 350) OR received exempt status for qualified scores on STAAR End-ofCourse exams OR qualified scores on SAT, ACT or PSAT; REQUIRED to pursue Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree

8

Public Services Endorsement Basic Information

The Public Services Endorsement prepares students for occupations in healthcare, public safety, and other service-oriented jobs. Many of the pathways here offer opportunities to obtain work-force ready certifications and licensures or to continue to post-secondary institutions.
