Romans—Part 50

October 21/22, 2017 Romans 8:10-13

FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1) 8:10 The presence of the Holy Spirit is your guarantee of eternal life. 2) 8:10 Although believers’ physical bodies are subject to death, our spirits are even now enjoying life. 3) 8:10 Death is the consequence of sin; life is the reward of justification. 4) 8:11 You first must decide if you believe God raised Jesus from the dead. 5) Do you struggle to believe what Paul is saying? Ask yourself these questions:  Am I open to the possibility of what the Bible is saying to be true?  Does Paul’s moral character make it unlikely that he is easily given to deception?  Do his witness and teachings hang together? Does Paul contradict himself, or are his accounts supported historically/factually?  Does Paul offer supporting witnesses/evidences? Do they hold up?  Are there other credible witnesses, or is he alone in this?  Does the claim yield insights that makes sense of the total meaning/picture?  Are there any lasting effects that give credence to Paul’s testimony on these issues? 6) 8:11 The Holy Spirit is the means by which God gives life. Not only has the spirit of the Christian been made alive, but in time, our bodies (which are now under the curse of death) will also be resurrected (John 6:63; 1 Corinthians 6:14; 2 Corinthians 3:6, 4:14; 1 Thessalonians 4:14). 7) 8:12 There is a measuring rod by which you must check yourself. Do you see evidence that you are growing in your walk with Jesus Christ? Are you different today than you were one year ago or five years ago? 8) 8:13 A regenerate/born again person will sin (1 John 1:8), but that person will be kept by the Holy Spirit from a habitual life of sin. A life of sin is evidence of an unregenerate heart (Ephesians 1:13–14; 1 John 3:9; Jude 24). 9) 8:13 The Christian is one in whom the Spirit is constantly at work through instruction, exhortation, and discipline. 10) 8:13 God’s people fall back when their focus turns away from Him and they instead focus on the things of the world (Colossians 3:1–3).
