ld .

1. An aqueous solution containing a valuable solute is colored by small amounts of an impurity. Before crystallization, the impurity is to be removed by adsorption on a decolorizing carbon, which adsorbs only insignificant amounts of the principal solute. A series of laboratory tests was made by stirring various amounts of the adsorbent into batches of the original solution until equilibrium was established, yielding the following data at constant temperature:

The color intensity was measured on an arbitrary scale, proportional to the concentration of the colored substance. It is desired to reduce the color to 10% of its original value, 9.6. Determine the quantity of fresh carbon required per 1000kg of solution for a single stage operation, for a two stage cross current process using the minimum total amount of carbon, and for a two stage counter current operation. [16] 2. By means of neat sketches, describe schematically, the different forms of reboiler arrangements in common use. [16] 3. (a) Explain typical equilibrium diagrams used in leaching operation. (b) Define distribution coefficient.

(c) What is constant underflow?

[11+2+3]

4. (a) Describe the mixer - settler cascading system with a neat flow sheet of three stage counter mixer settler extraction to cascade. (b) Discuss about Podbielniak extractor with a neat sketch.

5. A ten-plate distillation column with re-boiler and total condenser is available for use. An equimolar mixture of A and B at its boiling point is to be separated to get a distillate containing 90% A (mole%). The relative volatility of mixture is 2.6. Calculate: (a) minimum reflux ratio

(b) the yield of distillate and residue for R = 1.2.
