The SLIS Library The School of Library and Information Studies Library is located at the third floor of the Main Library, Gonzalez Hall. The SLIS Library collection is primarily for use of the SLIS population, but is also open to the constituents of the university as well as to researchers and graduate students from other universities. The library’s role is to serve the needs of the faculty, students, and researchers of the university. The main function is to cater to the curricular and research information needs of the constituent of the School of Library and Information Studies. The Library offers circulation, reserve, reference, information and reader’s advisory services. Control Desk The library collection is on open shelves except the reserve books, videotapes, etc. A control desk is maintained to safeguard library property. Inspection of books, packages and bags is done upon leaving the reading room. Bags must be deposited at the bag counter before entering the reading room. Presentation of a duly countersigned ID is required upon entrance to the library. The ID is non-transferable. It cannot be used by any other person. Falsification and Use of Someone else’s ID Card Any person who falsifies the ID card after due process will be suspended from the University for not more than one semester. Any person who uses an ID card or borrower’s card not his own shall have his library privileges be suspended for not more than one semester. The Library Resources The library collection consists mainly of books, pamphlets, journals on library and information science and other related fields. Other collections such as vertical file materials, theses, pamphlets, annual reports, UNESCO publications and newspaper are maintained to supplement the book and periodical collections.

Books, monographs are placed on open shelves are referred to as the Circulation books. These are freely accessible to library users and may be borrowed for two weeks. The Reserve Collection consists of textbooks and collateral materials recommended by faculty members as required reading for courses and for the shared use of all students enrolled in these courses. UNESCO publications, student reports, vertical file materials, pamphlets are available for overnight use. The Reference Collection consists of general materials such as encyclopedias, handbooks, dictionaries, bibliographies, indexes and others which fall under the same category. These materials are strictly for ROOM USE ONLY. Books in this category may be taken out for reproduction purposes. Both Reference and circulation books are placed on open shelves according to the Library of Congress Classification Scheme. For its bibliographic databases, the library utilizes the University of the Philippines Integrated Library system (iLib), and Micro-CDS/ISIS, a UNESCO produced software package. The OPAC was maintained to access the collection. The library also offers Internet access, printing at reasonable cost. REQUIREMENTS Students who are currently enrolled, regular faculty and staff of UP may use the library upon presentation of a valid ID issued by the college library or mother campus. Alumni and former faculty and staff may use the library upon presentation of a valid ID and proof of former UP status. They are issued a special library card which entitles them to free use of the library for five (5) days per semester or summer; after which they pay a research fee of Php20.00 per day or Php450.00 per year.

Government researchers may use the library upon presentation of a valid office ID and referral letter from the office's Head Librarian. They are issued a special library card which entitles them for free use of the library for (5) days per semester or summer, after which they pay a research fee of Php20.00 per day; Php450.00 per semester; or Php300.00 per summer. Private researchers and graduate students from other schools may use the library on Monday or Wednesday only, upon presentation of a valid office or school ID and referral letter from the office's or school 's Head Librarian. They are issued a special library card upon payment of a research fee of Php50.00 per day; Php450.00 per semester; or Php300.00 per summer. PRIVILEGES Five circulation books may be borrowed by undergraduate students and 10 circulation books by graduate students. Circulation books may be borrowed for two weeks during the semester and one week during summer. These can be renewed only once on the due date. A total of two reserve books (1 per subject) may be borrowed overnight.. Ten circulation books may be borrowed by the faculty for one month. Faculty may also borrow serials(except current issue) for one week. Said materials can be renewed only once – on the due date. Ten circulation books may be borrowed by regular Research, Extension and Professional Staff (REPS) and 5 circulation books by regular Administrative staff for two weeks. These are renewable only once – on the due date. Alumni, former faculty and staff of UP, government researchers, private researchers and graduate students from other schools have Library Room-Use privileges. You can not borrow a book overdue book.

FINES Circulation book Php2.00 per day exclusive of Sundays and Holidays. Reserve book Php1.00 for the first hour; Php5.00 for succeeding hours; Php50.00 for one full day inclusive of Sundays and Holidays. Points to Remember in Borrowing a Reserve Book All reserve books are strictly for room-use or overnight only. However, upon request of the faculty members, reserve books may be taken out of the library for classroom use for the duration of the class. 1.No ROOM USE RESERVATION IS ALLOWED. 2. Overnight Lending Hours: Weekdays ………3:00 p.m. - 4:45 Saturdays ……... 10:30 a.m.- 3:45 3. Reserve books borrowed for room use may be returned after two hours. For an overnight loan, return on or before 9:00 A.M. The following day. Failure to return overnight reserve books on time cancels your reservation privilege for the rest of the current semester. 4. Any person who fails to return a reserve book shall pay a fine of (50) pesos for each full day inclusive of Sundays and holidays. A second offense within a semester shall subsequently suspend/curtail his privilege for the rest of the semester or summer. 5. Any person who draws out a reserve book for overnight use with out an approved reservation shall pay a fine of fifty (P50) pesos. His/her library privileges to borrow from the reserve collection shall be suspended for two weeks on second offense. Repeated violation of lending rules will be justification for the curtailment of the student’s library privileges. Lost book Replacement of good photocopy of same title, Replacement of another title to be approved by the

faculty/librarian or payment of its current value plus 50% of the cost of the book of photocopy cost. If lost book is found, a fine of Php2.00 per day is computed from the date due until date of return, but not to exceed the current cost of the book. If current cost cannot be assessed for certain materials , e.g. Filipiniana materials, 50% will be added to the acquisition cost.
